plex on android-tv (Nvidia shield) does not load video and times out with an error only if Bluetooth headphones are connected.
from the logs, it tries to transcode EAC3 audio and fails. logs are attached
My Plex client audio passthrough settings are set to HDMI. the video fails to play if I change or disable passthrough settings even without Bluetooth headphones. so the only way it plays is if I set the audio passthrough to HDMI.
I do not experience issues with any other audio format.
If I start media without the BT headphones connected - it starts. Then if I turn on the BT headphones - it connects and continues playing fine until the next file opens or I try to change the playback settings like subtitles. If I do that - it stops again.
I am not sure what “changing the quality to force to transcode” means.
Yes I know it starts without the BT but connecting the headphones is causing your server to transcode the audio as EAC3 is not supported over BT. So I just want to confirm if your server is failing to transcode as I am able to play over BT fine.
So what you need to do is start playback normally without the BT headphones, once playback is busy bring up the OSD menu by pressing down on the remote, then on the bottom right, click on the HD button > select Show All > then select a low quality like Convert to 320p or 240p. Then let me know if it plays fine
the logs are here (separate link, not as an attachment) - Microsoft OneDrive
CPU is i5-6600k.
strange, I remember before the EAC3 became popular I was able to transcode video.
just tried another media with AAC 5.1 audio codec, it started up, I was able to lower the playback quality and it plays.
Dear All,
Any news regarding this issue with bluetooth headphone and EAC3 ? I have the same issue with my shield TV pro. When i play a movie or a tv show with an EAC3 sound, plex player stop playing because Plex try to convert to opus… I have this issue only on the shield pro TV. On my TV directly with bluetooth, no problem…
Tks by advance
cannot say definitely, as I have (temporarily) switched my Plex server from a Windows virtual machine to the Plex server on Nvidia Shield and the issue is resolved. Nvidia shield server transcodes with BT headphones connected (but it still falls back to transcoding, not direct play).
the likely root cause was that Windows VMs are not supported for hardware transcoding on the Plex server. I remember some KB I’ve seen, but unable to locate the link at the moment.
and there are some shenanigans when the PLEX server with hardware transcoding enabled tries that on a VM and fails not falling back to software transcoding. Just a wild guess.
The next step is to try to play around with containers to see if I can make it work.
On my side, I even try with another apps (sorry plex staff) on my shield pro : Nova media player or VLC, no problem with EAC3 and my bluetooth headphone.
