Plex app Android TV shield doesn't transcode to OPUS

Server Version#: 1.40.1.8227
Player Version#: 10.11.0.183 (67e5c2db)

I have a problem with the Android TV app for the Shield. Related to the EAC3 5.1 audio codecs and whenever I use Bluetooth headphones. The issue is that I can’t play the file, and it ends up giving an error. In the playback info, it indicates that it “attempts” to transcode EAC3 5.1 to Opus.

My hardware and software data are (as of March 30, 2024):

  • Plex server: 1.40.1.8227 on Ubuntu 20.04 x64 on a dedicated server

  • Client application on Android TV Shield 2019: 10.11.0.183 (67e5c2db)

  • Sony WH-CH720N headphones

  • Logitech z906 5.1 speaker system

  • Hisense 4K HDR 55" TV connected to Logitech via optical

I should mention that all files and audio play normally, in Direct Play, even when listening with headphones… except when the audio file is EAC3 5.1. I suspect that the issue is occurring again due to a recent update of the client app. Because a few months ago, somehow, it started working again. However, I’ve read on Reddit and some forums that there are certain problems with EAC3 5.1 audio on the Shield, which worsen when Bluetooth headphones are involved.

Could someone help me? … In the meantime, today, I’m going to try using Kodi with the Plex addon… or downgrade the app on the Shield.

Thank you very much.

The files you are trying to play with EAC3 audio do they have subtitles enabled? I tried reproducing your issue and the only time playback won’t start for me is when subtitles are enabled. Just want to confirm this is what is happening to you?

yes, the forced subtitles are enabled
… otherwise, i’ll try to play without

i’ll say you
