Ok all I really dont know what is going on but here is what is happening.
I recently bought the full set of Friends (about 40 DVD’s) and two of them could not be accesssed by my PC for burning for MP4 Format.
So I found the missing episodes. while my email to the manufacturer is HOPEFULLY going to be answered sometime (no response yet)
The formats I found were M4v (I think) and mp4 files. When I added both of these types of files to my server, and the folders for my burned Mp4’ s they did not show up even though my burned files showed up and worked immediately.
Is there a reason why these files added to the same folders after my initial burns do not show up in the server, the folders in movies, or recently added?
I tried all three of these options for refreshing the movies found on this page
I also restarted my server multiple times and even added movies I burned (mp4) after this and they were picked up immediately
Can anyone help me figure out why these are not beeing added or transcoded?
Would you mind sharing how you organized / named those files inside your tv-show library folder?
Most hiccups of that kind are related to some odd naming which isn’t recognized by Plex (or leading Plex to mismatch individual items). This means they could be ignored for good or added as different quality versions to other episodes.
If you have configured your library to prefer embedded metadata, this can interfere with the files getting properly associated.
Here is my folder setup… Movies->TV->Friends-> Season 1(etc)
File names are as follows…
The ones that work are= Friends_S1_D1_Title1.mp4
The ones that don’t are = Friends S03E17.mp4 and Friends S06E01 The One after Vegas.mp4
I hope that helps a bit
I will try to figure out the embeded data thing.
Thanks for all the suggestions and wisdom
You might want to revisit your file naming.
It’s actually a bit surprising if Plex deals with Friends_S1_D1_Title1.mp4 as a file name… so this implies Plex might actually be using some additional information from embedded into your files (e.g. episode numbers)
Naming should be like this:
TV <- the folder linked to your TV Show library
Friends (1994) <- release year is optional but can help matching
Season 01
Friends (1994) - s01e01 - optional episode title.ext
Friends (1994) - s01e02.ext
...
Where .ext. is a placeholder for your respective file extension.
Personally I have disabled embedded metadata to avoid confusing the server.
The Plex Dance mentioned by dbirch should hopefully do the trick. I suppose with all the back and forth, Plex had already cataloged the files “somewhere” and recognized them (same size, same fingerprint) – therefore it didn’t do a full match.
This is actually a pretty helpful feature if you start fiddling with file names in the future but don’t want Plex to turn your library upside-down. It can be quite cumbersome if you’ve been doing changes to your file names for the purpose of getting them matched properly in the first place.
It’s about temporarily moving the mismatched files to a folder outside the one linked to your library.
Example:
…
TV <- the folder linked to your TV Show library
Friends (1994) <- release year is optional but can help matching
Season 01
Friends (1994) - s01e01 - optional episode title.ext
Friends (1994) - s01e02.ext
...
Temporary Folder
Friends (1994) - s01e05.ext
