I am running Plex, Download Station, etc. on my DS1515+. I recently added NordVPN to my NAS, using the OpenVPN configuration. This has broken Remote Access to my Plex Media Server, which is not unusual, apparently. I have seen several threads relating to this issue, but none that actually, definitively seems to fix the issue. Has anyone actually configured this combination to successfully work? If so, what steps do I need to go through to resolve this issue?
Aaron
NOTE: NordVPN does not have any method of port forwarding within their service.
At the moment, there is no known universal method which works for VPNs and remote access on Synology.
Personal discussions with some devs have provided a few ideas which are being evaluated. Sadly, at this point in time, there is nothing definitive which can be said.
On a personal note, when such a resolution is available, I will be waiting in line to implement it.
sigh That makes the Baby Jesus cry. I was afraid that you were going to say that. Well, until that day, I’ll keep my fingers crossed. I really don’t want to have to set up two devices (one for downloading and one for Plex), but this might end up being the only option.
There is a way make your machine available over VPN but you’d have to have a DynDNS serve the role of Plex.tv. Also, in doing that, you’d have to turn off your Plex Pass features as well as security. If in a bind, that method will work but I do not recommend it in any way due to the obvious security implications. It would require your VPN provider to permit PMS’s port to be accessible at their network endpoint.
after several hours of messing with this same issue I have discovered a fix. It worked for me anyways. On your router setup port forwarding for 32400. on your Synology go to Control Panel>Network>Network Interface and disable you NordVPN. Once it’s disabled go into your Plex server and go to Settings>Server>Remote Access check the box for manually specify public port and enter 32400. select retry. It should pull the ip from your isp and connect. Now that it’s connected go back to your Synology and connect back to your NordVPN. You should now be connected to your NordVPN and your Plex server has Remote Access. It’s been working for me for several months now.
