So I have a large music collection… Plex scans for a while… then just stops. I manually scanned through my library to spot check it and make sure all of the old albums were in there. Nope. I had to kick off an update 3 times (so far!) and each time it adds some more and then dies.
For a program so well thought out it seems like finding duplicates (non existant), the large library update process dies, etc should have been bugs that needed to be fixed a long time ago. Do you agree?
They may not necessarily be bugs. As for duplicate detection, Plex has never claimed to be a media management tool. Plex is a presentation tool. They play your videos, photos, and music. Outside of a couple specific exceptions, Plex made a conscious decision to not touch your media files. I think most who have expressed an opinion on this are in favor of it staying that way.
As for the library update process dying, there may be other issues at play to cause this. I have rebuilt my music library on a number of occasions, and it never fails to finish. Maybe if you provided the log files from your Plex server it would help to figure out why it is stopping.
The library update process dying is in many cases due to too many track files in one folder
(at least when a ‘Plex Premium’ music library is in use).
The cure for that is to create a proper folder structure and to ‘tag’ your files in advance.
Music/Artist Name/Album Title/01. TrackArtist - TrackTitle.mp3
Or fall back to a ‘last.fm’ style music library.
Hi Otto… seems like yet another feature it should support but once again doesnt. There are tons of music cleaning softwares out there that do this. It will take whatever folder structure you have and re-org it to match what you mentioned:
Music/Artist Name/Album Title/01. TrackArtist - TrackTitle.mp3
Why cant Plex have an option to do this? Take a folder with a thousand mp3s in it, and if this option is checked, look up the meta for them, then move them into the correct Genre/artist/album/etc structure.
Seems like you have to buy other apps to do almost everything…plex is great but still needs more features.

See above. Plex doesn’t touch the files.
