No, it was done as a performance and to support newer features. With the old scanners the scan time was significantly longer, and used more resources as it was attempting to guess at your file/folder structure. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt. By being less tolerant it radically speeds up the scan times, allows support for edition naming, and allows you to hide stuff from the scanner using [ ]. At some point you need to recognize that it became too bloated, and needed to go on a weight loss diet.
You cannot make everyone happy, But fixing your library to standard naming schema isnt that hard.
Unless Plex sees the validity of my complaint… OR more likely I will have to eat doo doo and switch over. I get that, I just hoped I could avoid the pain in the ass. You may very well have a larger and more complex library than mine and it’s good to hear a success story, but I’d argue my file names are pretty damn good in terms of being formatted in such a way that plex should be more than happy 99.9% of the time. I hope my previous experience isn’t looming in my future when/if I am forced to migrate to the “upgrade”.
On a Sunday evening, after finishing my income tax returns, I said what the heck, I am going to do the upgrade. It’s been cranking along on my movies and TV shows. Seems to be doing well; it does them one by one and can see the spinning circle on each show as it does its thing. I’ve looked at several of the shows that have been processed and all seems good.
I also added a few TV shows while the upgrade is in process and they scanned in accurately, including the ones that did not before (The Yogi Bear Show and Dragon Tales.) The database upgrades seem to have solved my problem.
I’ll report back if I encounter any problems, but so far all is well.
All done. I had a grand total of one issue, with one of the first shows that I ever added to Plex three years ago. Basically I had some poorly named extras files in the Season 00 folder. Other than that, everything went fast and smooth.
I am pretty meticulous about my folder and file naming, so in the end, that made the upgrade pretty easy.
