Nvidia Plex Server Transcode location?

I have a question on Nvidia sync setup.

So I have a 16gb shield. I recently connected a USB 128GB usb as internal storage + USB 500 GB SSD external drive.
All my media is on a nas via network storage and I have all the plex data on the USB attached 500GB SSD. So the meta data and DB are on the 500GB SSD.

When I select a few movies and click on sync, some work fine and majority do not sync. All the app says there is an error with this item.

So the question I have is, where does the transcode happen? I have not changed any settings on the transcode side, So i am guessing it does it on the 128GB usb drive but not sure.

Can you share what could be causing this issues and should I move the transcode location someplace else?

Any help would be great. Thx.

I don’t think it’s set by default. You have to create a folder for the Transcode to take place. Create a folder where you want the transcode to take place. Go to Settings, then Transcoder, Transcoder Temporary Directory and set the location, then Save.

Thx. I went to SDCARD and created a folder and pointed it there.
Im still having transcoder fails when trying to sync.
Is there something else I need to change to make it work?

The metadata and database are by default on the internal 16 GB internal storage. If your 128 GB is setup as Adopted Storage, then the metadata, database and transcode should be placed there vs the 500 GB drive. Also drop the name Transcode from the Transcode directory. For example mine is located /storage/emulated/0/Temp.

I started experimenting on this because I had the issue that transcoding wouldn’t work because of limited internal space (16GB shield) and had the following cases:

  • Setting the transcode folder to the external USB mounted as removable storage using the NVIDIA_SHIELD directory as otherwise in the Plex logs it complained that it couldn’t write on it

Result: the same failure. In the USB directory it only created the session folder BUT tried to do the actual transcoding on the Internal memory which failed due to limited space

  • Based on the above result I came to the conclusion that it will not work if the whole DB of Plex is not in the removable drive but I didn’t want to do that. So what I did was to format the USB drive as adoptable storage and afterwards transcoding worked by just keeping the folder option blank

At the same time I didn’t move the Plex storage to the adoptable storage so I think I have the best of both worlds now
