Nvidia Shield 2019 sw version 8.2.0

Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252
Player Version#: 8.6.0.20351 on NVIDIA SHIELD 2019
Plex Media Server Logs_2020-09-14_21-52-51.zip (4.8 MB)

After 8.2.0 upgrade I have issues playing movies. TrueHD and DTS is being transcoded to AC3 and with some files I got a black screen with no audio and no video. The plex server dashboard show the current activity but in the Plex player there is only a black screen.
Please help.

To what is the Shield connected - TV, receiver, etc?

As a test, play a movie without subtitles. They are forcing a video transcode.

What settings do you have for subtitles in the Plex app on the Shield?

PMS thinks the device attached to the Shield does not support TrueHD audio.

What setting do you have for Passthrough in the Plex app on the Shield?

Thanks a lot for your answer:
I tried the same movie without subtitles. Same problem. I always used .srt with no issues before.
Subtitles settings: Burn Subtitles: Automatic. Attached image with the rest of subtitles settings.

The Nidia shield is connected directly through HDMI to receiver Yamaha RX-A3080 that supports TrueHD. Passthrough settings is HDMI. Attached image aswell.

I attached new logs too.

Is the Shield remote from the Plex Server?

There is a bandwidth limit of 80 Mbps set somewhere. Maybe Settings -> Remote Access?

The movie exceeds the bandwidth, which forces a transcode.

For 4K HDR movies such as Philadelphia correct?

This is a side-effect of the video transcoding.

The CPU in your QNAP does not support hardware accelerated decoding of HEVC video, and it is not powerful enough to transcode 4K without hardware acceleration.

It’s remote but I played the same movies before ugrading the Nvidia firmware and the new plex player with no issues. Bandwitdh it’s not the problem. I read a lot of comments of users with the same issue of getting transcoding because of bandwith being the server even locally.

No. It was Top Gun but with no subtitle. Dashboard showed direct play and only black screen on the shield.
I know the issue of NAS transcoding capability. That’s why I choose the correct equipment for direct play that worked until recent software upgrades.

For future reference, always mention such details. It helps with the troubleshooting.

What is the uplink bandwidth at the Plex Server location?

On the Plex server, what is the setting for Internet Upload Speed?

On the Plex server, what is the setting for Limit Remote Stream Bandwidth?

What is the download bandwidth at the Shield location?

Sorry about that I will mention it on the future.
Internet upload speed is at 100Mbps
Limit remote stream bitrate: Original (no limit)

Thanks for the information.

For some reason, Plex thinks 1917 requires 88.776 Mbps of bandwidth, which is excessive for a Blu-ray rip (If I’m reading the logs correctly, it looks like a 1080p Blu-ray rip).

My rip of the same movie is ~37 Mbps.

To verify, can you analyze the 1917 movie using MediaInfo? What does it show for the video bandwidth? See example below.

Also, pull the XML information for the file and post it to the thread. That will show how Plex has analyzed the file. To save the web page, right click in the window and choose “save as.” Then zip the .xml file. The forum does not support XML attachments. See example below.

Comparing the information from Media Info and the Plex XML info will show if Plex is analyzing the movie correctly.

If this is going in the direction I think it is, there are a couple of ways to attack it.

One is to find out if Plex mis-analyzed the movies and correct it. This basically involves Plex Dancing the movies. That will force Plex to re-analyze them.

I’ve had Plex mis-analyze movies on my system. To correct the info, Plex has to perform a deep analysis of the movie, which occurs as a scheduled task. There might be a better way, but the only way I know to make that happen is to Plex Dance the movie. Choosing “Analyze” from the “three dots” menu for the movie does not perform the deep analysis.

A second way to go at things is definitely a workaround and can cause other problems.

Basically, tell Plex you have a larger Internet connection than you really do. Increase the setting for Internet Upload Speed to something higher than 100 Mbps. Try 120 or 150 or 0 (no limit). Then play a movie and see if it direct plays. Also, check the log files for the Streaming Resource: Bandwidth exceeded message.

This is definitely not the best solution. It can cause issues if you’ve multiple people streaming remotely.

That’s everything I can think of right now.

Mediainfo for 1917 shows 33.2 Mb/s it’s a remux of the Bluray.

Plex Dancing will not work for 5000 movies.
The TrueHD issue still persists and the one with the black screen even with no subtitles persists aswell.
Thanks for your time.

Here’s the required bandwidth info in the XML. Very different from my version.
requiredBandwidths="2147483647,2147483647,2147483647,2147483647,2147483647,2147483647,2147483647,2147483647"

You can also run the analysis via the command line. I’ve never tried it, but one of the options is “–analyze-deeply.”

Why not? I once had to do it for over 30000 TV episodes due to a stupid error I made and it took me only about 20 minutes to complete the dance and then it only took Plex a few hours to rebuild the data.

But 5000 movies sounds like an entire library and it might be better and easier just to delete and recreate the library.

Thanks for your answer but there is no error here. Everything was working perfect before the nvidia shield upgrade and the new plex player version for the shield. I did the Plex Dancing for the ones mentioned here and the problem persist. That was not the problem.
