Nvidia SHIELD/Android app SSA/ASS format anime subtitles + transcoding problems

Is there any plan to switch from ExoPlayer to something with native .ass support? My only concern with transcoding is the playback smoothness. Even with x264 ultrafast and speed priority, I don’t see any transcoding artifacts but trying to move in timeline is really sluggish.
Fortunately, Kodi with PlexKodiConnect works 11/10.

ExoPlayer has the support. But Plex have customized their implementation of it to such an extent that they can’t easily upgrade it with the fixes Google implements.

+1 for ASS support

It would be nice if the powers that be actually listened to the customers and what they want. I mean I get it’s easy to say it’s hard and it could take up to 6 months to do something, which sounds bad, hard, and time consuming, but also think of this, if it was started when the thread was started it’d be done by now. If it was done when someone first brought it up it’d have been done years ago and not only that you’d would you have happy customers, they’d be telling others how great of a platform this is vs saying it’s great only if you have a file that doesn’t use subtitles. These days almost all anime, and most movies have even just a tiny part with subtitles in them. So a full movie will be transcoded because of that 5 sec. line of subtitles. Right now people talk about alternative services instead of talking up the service they actually paid for. That’s pretty rare. Look at other models. like the nfl people root for their team, look at phones it’s apple vs android, they are rooting for the other side, they talk about the great features their side has, or with tools Milwaukee vs dewalt. Xbox or playstation. Each side of all these things build loyalty with people that are passionate about the service, or product. When it comes to plex it’s just something we all use, and it fills a need we have, but we aren’t quite happy because the people in power to actually make it better never respond with more than we aren’t working on that,or it’s hard. If the masses that give you money are letting you know that something is important it would make a little sense to listen to them, and also to respond with some positive news. A roadmap something. At the very least take us all out back behind the shed and end it for us, by just saying we don’t matter as you have the money and we will never get what we all want/need so that we can at least just have a final answer.

Would really appreciate .ass support. Most of my library is made up of stylized subtitles using .ass

Hello

I just noticed that the problem I have that makes plex unusable is with ASS subtitles. Is something going to be done?
Question to shield users: when I configure the subtitles in image format only, I always have the transcoding. How are you doing ?

Piling on. Would love to see ASS/SSA subs support without transcode!

Come on Plex, add support for ASS/SSA. It looks silly and I’m seriously considering switching to Kodi now.

plus 1. Plex is a worldwide media center solution, it really should support for ASS/SSA subtitles. I have a Synology NAS and a sheild tv, now I can’t enjoy dolby atmos because of subtitles? This may push me to switch to Kodi.

Problem solved.
1.) Download Kodi add-on https://github.com/plexinc/plex-for-kodi (in zip format) [hint: it’s in drop down menu for Get Code button]
2.) Install and launch Kodi
3.) install add-on from zip
4.) Launch this add-on
5.) Go to settings (in add-on, under your user name not in Kodi) check “launch when Kodi starts”

This way you will have Plex browsing experience with all your libraries (older version of GUI that actually I prefer over new one) and kodi player (that do not have issues with subtitles).
Once kodi launches it will automatically start plex add-on.

Tested it for one day and seems to be working fine. Menus are more responsive then in native Plex app though images seems to be loading slightly slower.

[Edit]
If you want no OSD on pause (still image without any GUI) to read fast subtitles install Rapier skin and disable OSD on pause in Skin configuration menu (it’s under Media -> Full screen)

I use the Kodi add-on. Only caveat is Kodi doesn’t display Dolby Vision (for my 2019 Shield Pro anyways). Plex’s app can but any subtitles causes transcoding.

Well I’m on Samsung TVs so no issue for me (as it only supports HDR10+) :stuck_out_tongue:

Another +1 for ASS/SSA support on Android & AndroidTV

The android app as is, is capable of next to nothing. It’s an ancient exo player.

Vote here for player update.

This will not change or improve unless the latest exoplayer or better is used instead of the antiquated one built into the plex android and fire tv apps.

yea i dont even remember the last time they upgraded the exoplayer.

The Plex app uses a fairly recent version of exoplayer. Just updating to the latest version won’t magically make ass/ssa happen.
