NVidia Shield CANNOT be recommended for large collections. Device crashes, missing files, etc...

ok… I have installed the new Beta FW yesterday and did some testing today… I can confirm everything is working for me now… my liberary has round about 1300 items

how do I get into that beta? And when will that update be available to all users?

No remote access to my movies, not in my home with Ipad or outside my house. Time glass just spinning

HI,

I had issues mounting a nas drive, it kept asking for a username and password , and even when set it wouldnt accept it.

so i plugged in a 2tb drive via usb and shared nvidia shield with network so now i can download torrents directly to my mapped shield drive and also the 2tb drive.

this is probably the best way to do it, and the only time its slow is when its updating the library.

but that only happens when i add a ton of new content like all of my movies on initial setup… after that no issues.

it did drop off the network once, for some reason it wouldn’t start the server as it needed to be updated. but i went into settings and turned it on and it worked again fine.

when this happens it seems the mapped drive also needed to be turned off an on again.

perhaps disabling updates is the best way to go so the box doesnt reboot when im not in. as accessing media out of the home etc is what i use it for as well.

all in all i would have loved to have more options with the shield and the fact i cant map the drive from a nas was disappointing but i got it working fine the way I have it. so now my pc doesn’t have to be on all day. so im happy. but i could be happier if these SOFTWARE issues were fixed as it clearly just needs a good ironing out on the next update.

advertising as the best plex server needs to stand up the scrutiny of many. if you cant do that you are actually negatively impacting your brand

My NVIDIA Shield Pro has been laggy for quite a while (pretty much since I got the darned thing). But a couple of days ago it was horrid, took nearly 2 minutes for Youtube app to open. So I broke down and replaced the internal hybrid Seagate drive with an SSD drive. Sadly I was unaware that there was a Seagate drive in my Shield, otherwise I would have replace it when I got it (many previous bad experiences). The last good Seagate drive I’ve had was a 40MB MFM drive. Enough said about how much I do not like Seagate drives.

Now, why do I mention this drive replacement on this thread… I went back and re-evaluated Plex Media Server running on NVIDIA Shield. Previously I was unsuccessful at scraping my whole collection, got to the point of taking 2+ minutes per item to scrape, also it lagged out other applications, so I stopped the server and erased it.

With the SSD drive, I can now have my whole collection of Movies, TV, Music and photos. I took several hours, but all scraped just fine. Granted the scraping was slower than my Mac or Linux servers, but it did churn through it. 1000+ Movies, 150+ TV series, 16000+ songs, 27000+ photos.

Transcoding seems to be fine. I did have to update PMS after starting the server to get transcoding to work.

My only disappointment with using PMS on the NVIDIA Shield Pro (not counting replacing the drive) is that transcoding does not work well when subtitles are turned on. 10 seconds of play 15 seconds of buffering, 10 second of playing, 15 second of buffering… For me, this is not a huge deal since I primarily use devices that can direct play. But for the occasion that I do go remote (i.e. outside of my network), guess I would have to deal with no subtitles. So for now, I will still keep PMS running on my Linux server (4 year old core i3, which can transcode 3 1080P streams when hardware transcode is turned on, and subtitles).

Even with the SSD mod that made Plex Media Server usable (without subs), the NVIDIA Shield continues to just turn off after a day or 2 of running. To verify that PMS was the issue, I turned off PMS, and I have not had a reboot or shutdown since (a week).

almost 1 1/2 year later:

  • PMS on shield is still very unreliable…
  • still reboots when PMS takes too much system resources, e.g. when getting metadata from the net during a initial setup
  • still reboots on updating pms
  • .plexignore feature still does not work (i tried it last 1/2 year ago though, maybe its already fixed… naahhhh…)
  • still no way to use our own scanners
  • still no way to upload a previously database after a wipe
  • at least a few things are fixed, like missing files and folders when accessing via NAS
  • deletion of files on smb share (nas) works now

great job Plex & NVidia team!
great job…

PS: i will accept my own post now as answer, because i dont have intended to wait another 4-6 years until this works like it should have in the first place…

Hello

Very Strange because only PVR have problems on my Shield and it is beta.

The video sharing is efficient and all problems are on remote access when the Internet connection is not stable.
