Nvidia Shield - Doesn't recognize content (*&@!^%)

I have an 8TB external. Hooked to laptop everything plays over wifi. When plugged into my Shield directly via HDMI? I see all the icons but there’s no content. I bought the Shield so I didn’t need a computer.

Can anyone help me figure out how to directly connect my external drive to the Nvidia … and make it WORK?
