Nvidia Shield Dolby TrueHD playback is borked

Hello,

I thought I would update you all. I have rolled back my Plex Player to 8.30.2 and I am happy to say that has resolved the issue.

I downloaded the apk for my shield here :-

Official Plex apk download for Android TV

That should bring you to the 8.30.2 download site, I used the arm64v8a variant as I run a Shield Pro, other than the pro I understand you should use armv7a variant. This is the last version known to work with TrueHD correctly.

I give a breakdown of how to install it below, but fellow member Mitzsch has found an even quicker method which is in the post below mine which I would recommend you try first. I’ll leave my description in this post as a Plan B in case you have any problems.

To give you a step by step how I did this, and to hopefully put all the links you need in one place, you need a PC (Windows, Mac or Linux) connected to the same network as your Shield, load the Android Tools onto your machine here :-

Android Tools SDK for Windows

The links for iOS and Linux are on the same page. Install these tools. They are command line but they are straightforward to use.

Now enable developer mode on your Shield and allow Network Debugging. This is the tricky bit. There are excellent instructions here which I followed which explain it better than I could with screenshots :-

How To sideload apk onto AndroidTV platform (including Shield)

Now download the apk to your Shield using the instructions above, and when you see:-

Performing Streamed Install
Success

You should then be able to go back into your Shield and use the Plex player.

I’ve tried the Blu-Ray of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Contact, both of which were giving issues, and both seem to be playing OK with no issues at 24FPS bitstreaming to my receiver.

I hope this helps.

Best wishes,

David
