Nvidia Shield Dolby TrueHD playback is borked

@Mitzsch Turn off Auto-Update in the App Store settings if you want to maintain v8.30.2 public release.

Hello,

My first post here so sorry to be highlighting a problem.

Configuration

Sield Pro 2017 - Denon AVR X4300H - Sony VPL-VW300ES.

Server - QNAP TVS-EC880

Network - Gigabit hardwired throughout

I have been using this system for the past 4 years and I’ve been delighted with it, rock solid on everything I’ve played back from DVD resolution to 4K UHD rips and perfect sound on any format.

On the 25th I started having issues with stuttering when playing back either 1080p or 4K rips with Dolby TrueHD sound. I checked the network bandwidth and it was under 50 mbps, server CPU was under 25% and Direct Play was engaged for both audio and video so no transcoding anywhere. I 've struggled all weekend with this issue even resorting to going back to my old HTPC to watch a movie last night. Tried again tonight with a DTS-HD movie and it worked perfectly. Then I did some further digging and saw this thread, so you have re-assured me I’ve done nothing stupid, though I did spend the early hours of this morning factory resetting and re-installing my Shield.

I’m a paid up Plex Pass user, so how do I stop my Shield downloading the beta test version and make sure I only download the stable 8.30.2 instead of it downloading the 8.31.2.31546 which I currently have with the bug playing back Dolby TrueHD files?

As I said, apologies that my first post is to report an error but hopefully I can add my name to those that needs a fix from Plex. In the meantime, I would appreciate it if anyone can help stop my Shield downloading the faulty binaries but still download the working 8.30 binaries.

Thank you

David

I think Plex needs to roll back the stable channel to version 8.30 and stop pushing out updates at the moment until they can get this fixed.

Nope, then movies stutter like crazy. Either way I’m fvcked.

What’s it take to get back to v8.30.2?

You can’t easily, because 8.31.2.31546 is the current and approved stable. What you can do is side-load 8.30.2.31202 and disable auto-updates. That should work, although I have not tried it.

I’ll keep using the latest betas, if only to provide feedback.

EDIT: See here for the last working APK Plex for Android - #417 by ManuelPG

It’s the arm64v8a we need for the Shield Pro 2019 isn’t it?

From quickly googling it, yes: ā€œarm64 if you have shield pro and regular arm if you have tube versionā€

Side loading for testing purposes:

  1. Install ADB package (Android Debug Bridge)
  2. In Shield, enable remote debugging
  3. Uninstall current Plex app
  4. adb connect ip.of.shield.device
  5. Install app using adb (e.g. adb install PlexForAndroid-8.30.0.30594-690a1eda-Arm64v8aGooglePlayStdExo.apk )
  6. Open app on Shield
  7. Link to account
  8. Set appropriate app preferences.

I sideloaded 8.30.2, I’m playing Infinity Wars right now and so far so good.

Update, after the sideload I watched Avengers Infinity War 4K, TrueHD/Atmos all the way through without a single hiccup.

Following. Been pulling my hair out as I thought it was because I did a recent switch from Win 10 server to Ubuntu Linux server. Thought it was a setting somewhere I wasn’t getting. Realized probably not the case when I was able to get True-HD/Atmos to work fine within Kodi on my Shield Pro 2019 model.

Hello,

I thought I would update you all. I have rolled back my Plex Player to 8.30.2 and I am happy to say that has resolved the issue.

I downloaded the apk for my shield here :-

Official Plex apk download for Android TV

That should bring you to the 8.30.2 download site, I used the arm64v8a variant as I run a Shield Pro, other than the pro I understand you should use armv7a variant. This is the last version known to work with TrueHD correctly.

I give a breakdown of how to install it below, but fellow member Mitzsch has found an even quicker method which is in the post below mine which I would recommend you try first. I’ll leave my description in this post as a Plan B in case you have any problems.

To give you a step by step how I did this, and to hopefully put all the links you need in one place, you need a PC (Windows, Mac or Linux) connected to the same network as your Shield, load the Android Tools onto your machine here :-

Android Tools SDK for Windows

The links for iOS and Linux are on the same page. Install these tools. They are command line but they are straightforward to use.

Now enable developer mode on your Shield and allow Network Debugging. This is the tricky bit. There are excellent instructions here which I followed which explain it better than I could with screenshots :-

How To sideload apk onto AndroidTV platform (including Shield)

Now download the apk to your Shield using the instructions above, and when you see:-

Performing Streamed Install
Success

You should then be able to go back into your Shield and use the Plex player.

I’ve tried the Blu-Ray of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Contact, both of which were giving issues, and both seem to be playing OK with no issues at 24FPS bitstreaming to my receiver.

I hope this helps.

Best wishes,

David

Did I miss something? I installed the apk every time with the usb stick method, without the need to install Android Tools SDK.
All I needed was a usb stick, the 8.30.2.apk, and the total commander (works fine with the remote) installed on the shield. First I removed the not working plex version, then I copied the 8.30.2apk to the stick, plugged it into the shield, opened total commander, clicked on the .apk, the android installer popped up, and just clicked on install. Et voila - it works - (permissions for sideloading .apks via total commander on the shield needed to be set)

No. You can use the method that you suggest or I used to download the APK from my OneDrive and install it when I was installing the beta releases manually.

I doff my metaphorical cap to you. Looks like you found a much faster version than I did to achieve this.

I have rolled back to 8.30 and am currently watching Rocket Man completely glitch-free.

And just to be clear, this is with the latest Nvidia Shield software (v9)? I’m definitely going to do this downgrade if that’s what you guys are experiencing on v9.

Hi i seem to be having the same problem as everyone else can i ask how or where do i get total commander onto the nvidia shield pro Thanks

Rollback to version 8.30 and be completely glitch-free.

The Android/SHIELD version doesn’t matter in this case.
