Nvidia Shield Dolby TrueHD playback is borked

OK, some very limited testing with Mission Impossible 3 (Dolby Vision, TrueHD) and Rocket Man and all seems to be well.

I’ll have more time on the weekend to watch Mission Impossible 3 properly and see if the issue has really gone or not.

So I confirm with the newerst buildt (9.1) the problems are gone.

And started without any hangings or leaks.

To the confused guys:

The build that @sixones posted yesterday is 9.1.0.31664, while the latest beta is 9.0.0.31675. The former has the fix, while the latter, being older, doesn’t.

So, any of the 9.1.0.x builds should work.

yet the latter, being older, states a fix for TrueHD not starting, which isn’t helping with any confusion.

Well, that’s where the confusion stems from, but when you look at it outside of the five-digit build number at the end, the 9.1.0 is clearly newer than the 9.0.0. We might consider it an alpha build compared to the beta

EDIT: re-read your post, and I got you now. It’s damn early here

So I didn’t have to waste 50 more dollars on the pro… Glad to hear the Tube is all I really needed and this is all a software issue.

Just thought I’d post that last evening I demo’d at least 10 different 4K mkv rips, all with TrueHD audio tracks, and 9.1.31664 played them all flawlessly! My son, who has a '19 Pro, was also having issues. He installed 9.1.0.31687 and everything he’s tested also plays just fine. Hope a public release with this fix is forthcoming soon for those who don’t know about the beta program or aren’t participating.

I agree.
However its insignificant about knowing about beta releases as the current one is just as broken.
The 9.1.0 releases are not in beta yet, or at least id they are they do not use the new demuxer.

Regardless. The side loaded experimental release does indeed seem to work having tested with the link above on the same movies that had caused issues.

Thanks @sixones

For those new to this thread and those still confused, let me try to summarize what is going on.

There have been two issues since stable version 8.30.2.31202. The first one, an audio/video sync problem with TrueHD/Atmos, cropped up in 8.31.0.31102-beta, courtesy of

FIXES:

  • Player: improve TrueHD playback performance.

This issue was supposed to have been fixed in stable release 8.31.1.31487, as noted by

FIXES:

  • Player: ensure TrueHD remains in sync.

The issue persisted, though, through another stable version, 8.31.2.31546, which was the latest available until the 9.0.0.31676 release this morning.

Which brings us to the 9.x.x beta releases and the second issue being discussed here. A fix for the audio/video sync problem was put into 9.0.0.31509-beta, although nothing particular was mentioned in the release notes.

That same version introduced a new issue, which prevented a lot of files with TrueHD/Atmos from playing at all. 9.0.0.31650-beta tried to revert something that might have caused this behavior, but the issue remained.

BETA:

  • Player: remove TrueHD timestamp precision changes.

@sixones has since given us two experimental builds to test, 9.1.0.31664 and 9.1.0.31687, which both include a new demuxer. And that seems to now have fixed the second issue with lots of files simply not starting.

What a mess  Let’s please make this experimental build the official beta as quickly as possible! Thanks to all who have been contributing to this thread.

EDIT on 3/31/2022: to add to this, today Plex released stable 9.0.0.31676, which does not seem to contain the fix for the playback issue. My question is, why was this released then? Probably just to fix the audio/video sync issue, but that doesn’t make sense when the playback issue is arguably the bigger one.

EDIT on 4/1/2022: Today, stable version 9.0.1.31729 was released, but does not appear to have the fix for the playback issue.

Also released today was 9.1.0.31720-beta, which does fix the playback issue. This should be the version with the fewest issues, currently.

no, the tube has inherent issues that aren’t related to this issue.
if you attempt to play high bitrate UHD content then it will struggle and eventually grind to a halt - that has nothing to do with any TrueHD issues though.

the tube is a 32bit device with less RAM than the pro (which is a 64bit device).

Just thought I’d post that I have tried 5 different movie with version 9.1.0.31687, and it just works flawless!

As soon as I downgraded to 9.0 all issues came back, and none of the movies worked.

I also hope to see a public release with this fix as soon as possible.

That’s very promising news on the 9.1 “Alpha” build. Hopefully, this can be moved to Beta and then Prod status soon.

One question I have, is this 9.1 version with a new Demuxer able to play those 96Khz and/or 192Khz remuxes that sometimes have audio issues in Plex? Titles like My Fair Lady/Akira were mentioned above while I’ve seen this issue on The Right Stuff and concert remuxes like Dave Matthews & Queen: Montreal.

Here’s a search from BR.com if you want to find these titles to test:

96khz - https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/search.php?action=search&audio=96khz&sortby=popularity

192khz - https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/search.php?action=search&audio=192khz&sortby=popularity

That doesn’t happen anymore since the Shield Experience update. The Tube rocks with 4k remuxes now.

Yeah I actually saw comments about this elsewhere.

Yeah I know they’re working on a new player I’m just wondering when it’s going to come out I used to be able to play my dragon Ball z blu-rays then they started lagging The video would have to catch up this is before after the old problem where episodes load the videos frozen and then it starts audio keeps going within it starts playing fine after a while but then after my blu-rays would play. Then for a little while they would start video would pause and audio to keep going and catch up again and repeat throughout the whole movie then today I updated Plex hoping that it would be fixed that but now my videos don’t even play if I set it to transcode it’ll play I can’t play original but I can play transcoded but then I hear no voices only music and sound effects what is going on

With a broken beta and a broken stable I would imagine it will be released soon.

i beg to differ, and i have both a pro and a tube, and the tube continues to struggle to play high bitrate UHD content on NSE 9.0.1

Yeah I can’t wait back for the day when everything just used to work in place so smooth and fast all my blu-rays would play with no problem whatsoever you can scan through the device or you could pause the video and come back to it and resume it like in 20 minutes and it wouldn’t lag and wait for the picture to catch up to the audio it will be so nice once everything works again

just a shame that Plex for Android 9.1.0.31720-beta has brought back a bug with the “play next” function where it plays the video in the background regardless of whether the 10 second countdown has got to zero or not

fix one thing break another !
