Nvidia Shield Dolby TrueHD playback is borked

Greetings all,

TLDR; Side Load Plex 8.30.2.31202. No plans on upgrading beyond this version.

I just wanted to contribute to the conversation surrounding this issue. The Atmos functionality, UI Element Loading (to include posters loading, cursor movement, general overall Plex Usage) as well as the Player functionality for forward, pause, reverse actions in comparison is broken for every version of Plex after 8.30.2.31202, to include the most recent 9.0.6.31998. Plex version 8.30.2.31202 in all my testing is snappy, responsive, loads better and supports my Atmos setup flawlessly. I have since removed auto updating, removed plex, and side loaded the older version, and I will stay on this version indefinitely. It fits all my Plex needs. I don’t need all these extra features pushed on me, I’m running all my own content.

My setup:
Nvidia Shield Pro on Gig Ethernet. HDMI Out to Denon AVC.
Denon AVC-X6700H Fiber-HDMI Out to Sony VPL-VW715ES.
Klipsch Reference Atmos 7.2.4 Surround Sound.
Projector to 13.5 Feet Diagonal Screen, Seating 17.5 Feet Distance.

I had issues at the beginning of the month so i side loaded 8.30 thought i had it resloved. But was watching death of the nile. And it did it once lagged for a half second the continued to play. Watched spider man no way home fine for 30 min the the studdar. I was like probably be fine 10 min later again then again. Even the wife said it was jumpy. Booted up jellyfin no issues the rest of the night. Its beyond ridiculous that we have resorted to side loading like 10 revision back and still having issues.

I have ben a plex fan boy for a long time. And i usually try to defend them when i can but 2 month long problem with no signs of reslountion.

Previously there were limited options to go to other than plex not anumore.
Plex get your act together and let us just play our movies without issue.

I updated to the beta release 9.1 and my TrueHD issue went away:

Plex Server: 1.25.9.5721
Plex Player: 9.1.32183

true-hd-lk
true-hd-spiderman

Plex server Version 1.26.0.5715
Plex player version 9.0.6.31998

Just to add my two cents in as well. Any stream of 7.1 trueHD is stuttering and if i convert it to 5.1 it runs fine.

Update- I have side loaded the beta version and it seems to have fixed my problems!

turned off auto update as updating usually breaks more features than it fixes.

Well, for me, the latest beta broke everything…

I played 2 movies (Remux 4K HDR10 Atmos) and had dropped frames after ~45min playback + the app itself was super laggy. A simple stop and relaunch of playback was correcting the issue, but I had to do it every 45min.

How do you turn off auto updating? Dont you usually then have to disable it completely on the shield for all apps?

Otherwise I agree, not sure how plex keeps putting out such bug riddled releases.

Can you share where to download Plex 8.30.2.31202 for Shield Pro? Thanks.

I have turned off auto update for all apps. Small inconvenience consider to the torturous Plex bugs

I see 9.1.0 just got pushed to production. Does this match the code of the latest beta (9.1.32183)?

no, it’s 9.1.32210

Ah, a later version then :+1:

I just tried both my problem movies again there now - The Martian Extended @ 26:20 and Black Hawk Down @ 14:36

Both problems still exist - sound drops out and audio out of sync after these points.

PLEX Server (on rack server Windows 10 PC): 1.26.0.5715
Client on NVidia Shield 2017: 8.21.2.27212

What is current situation? Am I using correct versions? Was bug fix rolled back or something?

ps. I did have my own report ticket about this problem which was entered before this massive ticket: PLEX audio dropouts and sync issues with seamless branching on 4K TrueHD/Atmos movies - #10 by geogan

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t believe this issue was addressed in any of the beta builds thus far

Thought they said it was fixed a couple hundred posts previously.

No, that was general TrueHD playback that has allegedly been fixed (I’m waiting for people to report it fixed in the latest stable before updating). You’re on an older client version, so you wouldn’t have had that issue.

Seemless branching TrueHD issues haven’t been addressed yet.

There don’t seem to be any regressions from the beta to the stable with 9.1. Tried several movies all worked fine.

Oh right. I thought they were looking into the seamless branching issue. That is the only issue I have noticed with TrueHD/Atmos playback anyway. This is only client version the Shield uses - it didn’t tell me to upgrade to newer version anyway in a long time. I presume newer client are some beta versions then, and don’t automatically go to Shield.

You might need to clear your Play Store app cache and check for updates because you should see either 9.0.6 or 9.1 as the latest stable Shield Plex client version.

This thread’s particular TrueHD issue(s) started in version 8.31 and I’m currently on 8.30.2 with auto-updates turned off.

You should be seeing an updated version on the Play Store now.
