Nvidia Shield Files Not Accessible

Hey everyone! So I currently own an Nvidia Shield TV and it is absolutely amazing! So I have created a Plex Media Server and currently have a 2TB SSD attached to the Shield. I have transferred all my media over via Network using a MacBook Pro.

According to the image below, it appears that everything is indeed saved in my External SSD attached to the Nvidia Shield TV.

My problem is when I eject my “internal” network (see image below) or turn off my MacBook Pro then all of my files become inaccessible, even on the Shield itself. Is there something I’m missing? I thought once everything was transferred to the Shield I wouldn’t need to worry about my MacBook anymore?

This is the message I get on my Nvidia Shield TV when I disconnect my MacBook Pro:

“The file associated with this item is not accessible by the server. Please verify that the file exists and the necessary drive is accessible.”

Please let me know if you need any more information!

Does anyone have an answer for this?

Did you install Plex Media Server on your MacBook or the Shield? Sounds like the MacBook.

LIke MovieFan.Plex mentioned, you’ll need to be more specific about your setup for anyone to help you out. The thread is tagged with both server-mac and server-nvidia-shield so it’s confusing exactly what you are trying to do.

That said, my experience has been that if I disable (power off) my home router, the shield plex client with the same shield acting as the server is rendered useless for using plex. It appears the architecture is that the shield plex client receives all data (movie/tv show etc.) through the router like every other server/client would on the network…it’s just they are physically the same device so it seems like they wouldn’t need a router to help pass data…but they do. I’m not sure if that answers your question.

Thanks MovieFan.Plex and philly4 for your responses. I have edited the original post to help clarify the dilemma I am having. My goal is to not rely on my MacBook Pro at all in order to access my media remotely. My hope is to keep my Shield hooked up and ready to go so I can view my content whenever and wherever. If you need more information please let me know.

Sorry, but your clarification didn’t really add any new info. I am going to take a wild guess here so let me know if I am wrong.

You had PMS installed on your Mac. You had media on your Mac that PMS could see. Using the Plex app on the Shield you accessed your PMS and it worked. You transferred those files to the external drive connected to the Shield. You turn off your Mac. Now the Plex app gives you that message.

If the above is correct, then that is expected. The Plex app on the Shield was accessing your PMS on your Mac. No Mac, no PMS. What you are seeing is probably the cached data from before you turned off your Mac.

The solution is to enable Plex Media Server, then set it up as a new server like you did on your Mac. Here is a guide, https://support.plex.tv/articles/221099988-setting-up-and-managing-plex-media-server-on-nvidia-shield/.
