Nvidia Shield - Hardware Transcoding Not Working

Server Version#:1.25.3.5385
Player Version#: 8.28.0.30077
Running with adopted storage on USB SanDisk Extreme Pro (128Gb)

Morning, just wondering if others can confirm that HW Transcoding is broken on the Shield? I’m not sure the last time it was workng but would be interesting to know and if Plex Devs have it on a list of things to fix.

TIA

The first time I had one of my friends tell me that they could no longer continue watching something they had previously started (on some device that was forcing transcoding for some reason or another) was on December 29, 2021.

I’ve been on the beta release channel for a while (had to in the past because something else was broken, of course, and was trying to work around it faster), so it would have been whatever the most recent beta release was prior to that or close to it when transcoding broke or at least very likely. I don’t have many users that trigger video transcoding.

The last working version for me is 1.24.5.5173. Look here

Thanks

This is really helpful (and depressing) thanks.

Oh wow, I didn’t realize it was broken until reading this. Just tested and some movies I get audio only, and others just give an infinite spin.

Not only did the latest Plex update goober my server (start/stop buttons gone), but it broke transcoding…

Is there a way to downgrade while preserving metadata, bif, etc?

This is a big deal as transcoding was my top reason for getting the Shield TV.

Is this when playing back on the Shield that is also your server. If so, see Shield tv don't hw transcode - #25 by MovieFan.Plex.

No, I tested transcode using my iphone on cellular data. I have the app configured to transcode to save data. The first video I tried was 4k H.265 and all I got was audio. Second video I tried was HD H.264 and I just got infinite spinning. When I came back the app had crashed out.

I tested a 4K movie directly on the Shield, and it was fine, probably because it doesn’t have to transcode locally.

Ok, please provide the logs (both iOS and server) from this recent attempt.

Really appreciate the follow up…

PMS v. 1.25.2.5319 (smb)

iOS 15.1
App v7.26

Reproduced issues at approx 2:30pm.

  1. attempted to play 4k h.265 and got audio only.
  2. tried another 4k h.265 video and got infinite spinning
  3. tried HD h.264 file and got audio only

Verified I could play all content locally (no transcoding).

Plex Media Server.log (1.4 MB)
PlexDebugInfo-redpoint5-7.26-1822 (2022-01-14 14.37.11 -0800).zip (2.3 MB)

Look HERE, I described how I did the downgrade.

No, it’s playing back on any client.

I see in your iOS logs that you have the option enabled to automatically adjust the quality. Turn this off and see if you still have issues.
