Nvidia Shield + local HDD + GDrive

I’m currently trying to figure out whether an Nvidia Shield will meet my Plex needs, and I’ve been struggling to answer a question. I wondered if someone here might be able to help me…

I’ve got a lot of media stored on Google Drive, which I stream to my TV’s Plex client via an online Plex media server.

The problem with doing that is it restricts the quality of the files I can use, as my internet connection won’t stream high bitrate 4K files.

As such, I store high quality 4k content on a local HDD, and play this back on a different media player.

What I’d like to do is: use Plex to integrate both my Google Drive content and my local content, and present it seamlessly. That would allow me to store high quality content locally, and the lower quality content on GDrive, but navigate to both using the same interface.

My question is, being as the Shield can operate as a Plex media server or Plex client, can I use the Shield’s Plex app to do this?

Sure, you can setup the PMS of the Shield and point it to your local files.

Your Shield Plex client can then be used to browse through both libraries, local and remote.

Brilliant - thanks. I know what I’ll be buying myself for Christmas then!

FYI, for the 2019 models, be sure to buy the Shield Pro. PMS is not supported on the non-Pro (tube) Shield.

So I bought the Shield and now have can use its Plex client to access both my local files and remote files.

In an ideal world, I’d be able to merge these into one, with the movie tiles showing both sources in the same list. At the moment this doesn’t happen and I have to choose between sources on the left hand menu.

Is there any way of merging the two sources, into one list?

If the files are on separate PMS servers, then they will have to be in separate libraries.

If your files are on the same PMS server, then you can point the library at both directories (ex: d:\movies1; d:\movies2).

To add another directory to an existing library, click on the three dots to the right of the library name, choose manage library -> edit -> add folders -> browse for media folders, then navigate to the desired location.

Hmmm, thanks, I thought that might be the case. Unless I can figure out how to connect my Shield PMS to my Gdrive I’ll have to run two servers, and therefore have two libraries.

Here’s something for mounting google drive on Android smart devices. I can’t speak for it though.

Well I thought you want to keep your remote server for the Google drive stuff. If not, I would use a device like a NAS, Pi or similar to take care of the Google drive mount via Rclone and share it via samba with the Shield.
