NVidia Shield Pro 2019 - No screensaver when post play is displayed

Problem: Nvidia Shield Screensaver not coming on when Plex is sitting at the post play screen.

Plex Client Device: Nvidia Shield Pro 2019
Plex Client Version: 8.8.0.21200 (beta)
Plex Server Device: Synology NAS; DS416play
Plex Server Version: 1.20.3.3483

Logs:
PLEX Client Shield 2020-10-27_0906.log (1.0 MB)
Plex Media Server Logs_2020-10-27_09-08-11.zip (7.2 MB)

I have noticed this happening for several weeks now. I fall asleep watching movies or tv shows on PLEX. When I wake up, the Shield screensaver is not running and PLEX is sitting at the post play screen.

This morning I left it there and checked the dashboard on my computer and it looks like the “up next” episode from that postplay screen was registering as paused at the end of it’s duration. However, this episode was not played on the client yet according the post play screen on the client.

Here is a screenshot of the dashboard detail:
plex_dash_20201027_0851.PNG

Event occurred between 1am and 9am. No other media was played after the event. Logs were generated around 9:05am.

If I navigate away from the post play screen and wait, then the Shield screensaver will activate after its set duration.

Edit: I am able to recreate this problem by playing a movie. I skipped to the credits and let the movie complete and it sits at the “Just Played” screen. Shield screensaver is set to activate after 5 minutes of inactivity but it didn’t activate after waiting 20 minutes. Also, at the Shield home screen it was reporting that the movie was still playing (via the notifications at the top of the screen). Shield system version 8.2.0.

Yeah, I only mentioned the paused state being reported on the dashboard because it was reporting that an episode was paused at the end of its duration but that episode had not actually played on the client.

Seems to be a disconnect between what the client is doing and what the server is reporting.

Not sure if it is related, either, but I try to provide all the data I can.

Thank you for the heads up on the client beta update.

I updated and ran a new test.

Plex Client Device: Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 (System version 8.2.0)
Plex Client Version: 8.8.1.21331 (beta)
Plex Server Device: Synology NAS; DS416play
Plex Server Version: 1.20.3.3483

Logs:
PLEX Client Shield 2020-10-27_1111.log (1.2 MB)
Plex Media Server Logs_2020-10-27_11-13-27.zip (7.4 MB)

For expediency, this time I started a movie and used the chapter selection to fast forward to the credits. I let the movie finish and waited to see if the screensaver would start after its 5 minute timer. It did not. Client was still sitting at the “Just Played” screen:

I checked the PLEX dashboard again and it was not reporting anything playing this time, so that might not be related, after all.

I believe this is a known issue.

Understood.

Looks like I scrolled right past this post that was made back in July during my search for android-tv screensaver issues:

Thanks again. Updated and re-ran the test but the screen saver still does not activate on the post play screen using client version 8.9.0.21334 beta on my Shield.

I finally got tired of this and spent all day yesterday building a hilarious work-around to fix it:

Plex Webhooks -> HomeBridge w/ the Plex Sensors plugin filtered to TV Shows only -> Apple HomeKit -> Automation that presses “Stop” through Logitech Harmony back to the nVIDIA Shield (via Homebridge Harmony Plugin).

works great!

PS: When someone sets the “don’t auto play the next episode” option in settings, maybe just don’t display the post-play screen at all?

I’ve been dealing with this same problem too. To add something to it, if you hit the Home button on the remote from the post play screen after watching a TV Show, the Home Screen shows the next video is playing in the background. In the Server settings I have it set so that paused video streams terminate after 10 minutes. In this scenario, after 10 minutes a dialogue box pops up saying the stream ended but it just sits there and still does not allow the screensaver to start.

Looks like my screensaver is working now sitting at a post play screen. Not sure which version brought the correction but I’m on Client 8.10.0.21816 beta as of this post.

Thanks Plex team and Happy Thanksgiving!

Just turn the clock off, in plex app and screensaver works

Hmm, I’ll try this out. My screensaver has been working (with the clock on) while sitting at the TV show postplay screen. However, the screensaver does not always work with a movie postplay screen. This usually coincides with the Shield Homescreen reporting that a movie is still playing even though it has finished.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Edit: turning off the clock didn’t change anything. The screensaver does not turn on when sitting at the movie postplay screen and when the android homescreen is reporting that a movie is still active.

I saw this in the release notes today.

  • Player: ensure screen isn’t kept awake when last item ends.

Can a plex employee confirm if this fix is related, or a separate issue?

The fix mentioned solves the issue of no screensaver appearing when the postplay is displayed.

Thanks! I will give it a try and let you know if there are still any issues!

I just checked google play store on my shield and it only has version 8.11.xxxx., not the newer 8.12. Does google take a few days to get the latest version?

Ah sorry I must have missed the note about staged rollout. Maybe it would be better for the post to say “will be available soon”.

Ill give it a few days and try again.

@sixones So I just checked playstore again on my shield. The version available is 8.11.0.22186 with a date of Dec 15, 2020. There have been 3 or 4 updates since. Why is playstore not getting the new versions? The rollout only mentioned a few days of delay.

I understand I can manually download the updates - just wondering if this problem is with google or plex…or me? Thanks.

I am in the android tv beta program (client, not the server) and I am currently on version 8.13.0.22830 beta. I haven’t been having any problems with the screensaver lately.

I don’t remember which update fixed it but it was probably one of the 8.12.x updates that worked for me.

I guess that doesn’t help you until you receive the update with the fix but at least it might be sign that you will eventually receive the fix.

Ok I did a little more investigating. I learned a few things. First off, Shield uses android TV, which I discovered is a slightly different animal than regular android. As a result, the play store is not quite the same as the regular play store. For whatever reason the plex version on the android TV play store was not quite as up to date as the plex version I see on the regular play store, such as looking on my phone or internet browser. At the time, the plex version available was about 1 month behind.

Anyway - I checked again today and they seemed to have synced back up. The latest 8.13.0.xxxx is now available in both locations, so it was probably just a temporary glitch. Not sure if google or plex was the cause, but seems to be resolved regardless.

Thanks for the help guys!

I have no response to this other than to reiterate my comment above. In late January the playstore version on my shield was about 1 month out of date, but checking the playstore on a PC, the most current version was available. I do not know the cause. I certainly do not claim to have any technical understanding of the playstore.

Again, checking today they are both current, so it does not appear to be an issue at this time.
