[BUG]: no activity beeing recorded when playing a video + Homescreen not beeing updated (Nvidia Shield TV 2019)

Client is: Plex for Android 7.31.0.16605-beta Nvidia Shield 2019
PMS: 1.19.1.2645 on Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS

Bug report:
This issue is highly related to this topic:

… but may be a specific issue for the Nvidia Shield.

Similar to the aforementioned topic I recently noticed that whenever my Nvidia Shield is playing videos
a) it is not shown on my dashboard (+ not in Tautulli) but network activity is displayed
b) the Nvidia Shield’s homescreen gets not updated after finishing a video.

Other clients like mobile (also Android) or plex desktop work fine.

I could send you logs but I think it may not provide anything useful. However, tell me when you need them to resolve this issue.

Same issue, also using the app on Shield together with the most recent public server version. About 1/3 of the stuff I watch does not get tracked by the homescreen, Tautulli, Plex Dash etc…

Thank you for replicating and replying

Any Infos from the devs?

Can confirm the same issue. Running PMS 1.19.1.2645 on Ubuntu 18.04
My brother is currently streaming media but there is no indication in either dashboard or on my Tautulli activity. In my log I can definitely see that the media is playing. He is reporting no issues while this is happening. Both he and I are using nvidia shield with the latest plex player.

Looking back through watch history in Tautulli I can see during a full season that there are several episodes missing from the log so it seems to happen very frequently

Yup I’m seeing this too with new shield 2019 pro. Every so often whatever is playing doesn’t show up in the new plex dash app either playing now or the play log.

Been seeing the same thing for awhile now, and there was a thread from Jan 19 about this happening too. Not sure even how to debug this, but it’s really annoying. WAF is going down with every show we watch.

Client is: Plex for Android Nvidia Shield 2017
PMS: 1.19.1.2673 on Synology

Same issue here. Not showing playing, or played in Dashboard or Tautulli. DOES show both if I play via Windows desktop app, same network.

Some remote users showing up playing/played, where others say “I’ve been streaming all night…”, and nothing was showing up as being played at the time or played afterwords. Some Shield users show, some don’t, so unsure if only a Shield issue.

According to the changelog, this issue is fixed in 8.0.0.17168-beta. Haven’t had this problem yet since updating to that version.

It’s mostly fixed - I see the clients in the dashboard, and shows get marked as played. The main screen (e.g., TV Shows->Library) doesn’t refresh to reflect the newly-played status until you leave/enter the library.

Can confirm that it seems to be fixed currently on my setup

“this issue is fixed in 8.0.0.17168-beta” – do you mean the Android version ?

I am new to Android devices. Can you tell me how to update to Beta-versions ?

Thanks a lot, Chris

I am new to Android devices. Can you tell me how to update to Beta-versions ?

In the release anouncement thread for the Android TV betas, you can download the .apk files that you need to manually install the betas. Just do a quick google search how to “sideload apk files on android tv”, this will give you a lot of easy tutorials how to do it.

thank you. I think I’m already on a good way.

I downloaded and tried to install it on my Shield, allowed installing unknown apps, but Shield fails installing the apk.

Do you have a tip what I have to do to get it to install ?

I‘ve tried to uninstall Plex and to clear the cache from playstore, but installing the apk still fails. I need the arm64-v8 version, right ?

Meanwhile I found out, that my Shield is running arm64-v8 BUT in 32 bit mode. Can this be the reason and how can I change to 64 bit mode ?

Which Shield do you have? I think only the 2019 Pro version can handle arm64 (works fine for me). For the tube or the older Shields, you probably need armv7a.

I think the easier way is to just enroll in the Beta program. E.g., https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.plexapp.android?authuser=0&hl=en

I do have the 2019 tube version and yes, you are right, the tube can‘t handle 64bit apk‘s.

Very disappointing as nvidia doesn‘t tell anything about that :confounded:. They claim it‘s the same architecture, same X1+ SoC and so on…

So I have to wait until there is a 32bit apk

But anyway, thanks for your help !

I use the Nvidia Shield TV 2019 (tube) as well. I signed up for the Beta program and have been receiving beta versions regularly as they are announced and sometimes even when they aren’t announced. I haven’t needed to sideload anything.

Like ScottESanDiego suggested, you can sign up for the Beta program if you are interested:

Thank you so much for that link and suggestion. I‘ve signed up for the beta program

No problem. You might have to wait for approval from the Plex team. They will eventually send you an email and then you can carry on with the rest of the steps to start receiving the betas. Good luck!
