NVIDIA Shield Pro (2019) will not default to 4K when playing

The PLEX setting for HDMI are set to Passthrough. I direct play it completely. There’s no transcoding involved. I’ve included a log file for manually setting the ‘play version’.

Ok thanks. Something odd is going on. I’ll have to get with the devs and see if there is some parameter I am missing to see that is causing the 1080p to be preferred over the 4k.

Thanks, I look forward to your response.

I figured it out today.

Turns out, there was a setting on my receiver that needed to be adjusted.

I still think it’s odd that I could “play version” and it worked correctly.

Ohh well. Thanks!

Hi Dystaxia. It would be useful to know which was the setting that you adjusted on your “receiver” so that other forum members in the same conundrum, who happen to read this post, can try your fix. Thanks!

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3795
Player Version#: 8.11.0.22186

I am having the same issue as posted in this thread.

Problem: Every show or movie I select to watch, that has both a 1080p version and a 4K version under the same card, will ALWAYS play the 1080p version, unless I select the ‘play version’ button and select the 4K option.

Now, I’ve tried this exact same scenario on four other devices: Roku Steaming Stick+, iPad, iPhone and Plex Media Player for Mac OS; and they all start playing the 4K version by default.

The Nvidia Shield Home/Remote Streaming are both set at ‘Maximum’

Any ideas?

My issue was my receiver, Sony STR-DH770, had a setting under HDMI that was set at “standard” instead of “enhanced”.

Unless you have the same or similar setup, not sure how much of that is going to help you.

Thanks

I have the exact same problem but with different hardware. I have a Windows 10 server connected to an Nvidia Shield Pro client. The Nvidia shield is connected to a Denon AVR which then sends video to a 4K capable TV (and audio to my speakers). I keep both a 4K and an optimized version (either for non 4K TV or mobile) for movies. My server always picks the lower quality, optimized version. If I pause the movie and specifically select the 4K version, everything plays flawlessly. I have previously reported this but received no input. Would love to see this fixed!

I’m not familiar with your earlier report, but can you provide here a new log from the Android app and from your PMS after trying to play the 4K file. Let it play for 30s, stop it, then get me both logs.

Thank you for looking into this MovieFan.Plex! Attached are my logs. I rebooted my server, then chose a movie that has both a ‘4K version’ and an ‘optimized for mobile version’ in the same folder. I clicked play and let it go for a minute or so. My intro played, then the ‘optimized for mobile version’ started up (as it always does). I then stopped the move, chose “play version”, selected ‘4K version’ and it played flawlessly.

Here is a link to my earlier post describing the same behavior…
Plex Server always chooses wrong movie version to play(File removed)

I also need the log from the Plex app on the Shield. That info might be gone now so please recreate the steps I mentioned above and get me both logs.

I recreated the steps above, with the same behavior. For what it is worth, my dashboard shows that both the 4K and “optimized for mobile” versions are being direct played, but Plex ALWAYS selects the lower quality file for some reason. Can you provide me the XML from PMS for that movie? Investigate Media Information and Formats | Plex Support

I was having the same issue as described in the original post. I have a Denon receiver. I went to the HDMI settings and changed the 4k setting from standard to enhanced and it fixed the issue for me as well.

MovieFan.Plex, attached is the XML for the movie requested. Thanks!

Thank you apippin! I also have a Denon receiver. I changed the 4K setting from standard to enhanced and Plex is now selecting the 4K version (as it should). This drove me crazy for months!

Ok. Your receiveer must be reporting support to the app as 1080p under the standard setting.

Hi guys. This thread saved me from going crazy!

I have a Denon Amp and the enhanced setting was my solution. My theory here is that while my TV supports and happily plays HDR it is in effect a mode my TV has to switch to. It does this when a signal is received with HDR.

However, Plex and Denon communicate with no HDR video being played and therefore the HDR mode on the TV isn’t active. I am guessing this is when HDR is then reported as unsupported and why we get the 1080P version.

Setting to ‘enhanced’ forces the Denon to communicate to Plex that it can handle the HDR features etc and voila, when playing the TV switches on HDR mode.

I use Alexa to tell plex Plex “film name” and she’d never play the 4K, plus if I was watching a 4K and then had to stop, clicking resume would always play the 1080P version. Annoying as it was the last piece of the puzzle. With everything off and telling Alexa to play “film name” she’d turn on TV, change input, turn on amp change its input, turn on Shield, and open Plex and play the movie.

So happy right now!
