Nvidia Shield Pro: Plex no longer showing as an option for Home screen's "Play Next" section

Is anyone from Plex looking into this?

We are looking into it but can’t fine any rhyme or reason for it yet. We have not changed anything regarding it.

Thanks for the update

Issue still exists on Android TV version 9.21.3.1621. I’m glad Plex is officially looking into it now though.

I’m happy you’re looking into it.

I’m wondering since what seems like has happened is the Plex app has disappeared from the channel list for the homepage. Could Google have blacklisted it from that list?

I’m going to assume you’ve got contacts at either Google or Nvidia.

Could that be a road to debug it?

I’m wondering since what seems like has happened is the Plex app has disappeared from the channel list for the homepage.

I’m not sure what this means. It’s still in the Play store, and you can still favorite the app to make it show up on your home page. It’s the Play Next feature that isn’t working anymore. That isn’t available for every app; it’s something the app has to implement. So I think it’s more likely that that API changed in some way that broke it for Plex, than any intentional action from Google.

With that said, it does look like it requires a certification. So perhaps that cert expired or they changed that process in some way? Add programs to the Watch Next channel  |  Android Developers

It’s what you deduced. There’s a homepage and you can customize the “up next” section.

Up until recently it was listed in this section. As others in this thread have pointed out. It’s no longer there. As well as its not showing up in the homepage itself.

That’s what this whole thread is about. The up next feature has stopped working. So it was there, and now not. Plex employees are saying they don’t know why since nothing was changed on their end. So I’m trying to explore the idea that something changed on either googles side or Nvidia’s side.

I’m happy to explain things in more detail.

…i opened the thread. I know what it’s about. Lol. You said something about Google banning it as a “channel”. But it’s not a channel, it’s an app, and the app isn’t banned because it’s still in the app store. I’m just saying i doubt it’s some ban action by Google, and more likely an Api or certificate thing. But pure speculation

You’re right it is an app… but here look at this documentation

Go down to the section labeled “Customize (or Remove) the Play Next Channel Row”

The apps there are called “channels”. So to reiterate what I said.

I’m wondering since what seems like has happened is the Plex app has disappeared from the channel list for the homepage. Could Google have blacklisted it from that list?

  1. Channel list, aka the list of channels in that section.
  2. blacklisted it from that list, as in it was previously there, but now not there.

i’m on plex client 9.24.0.2018, server 1.32.3.7089, shield tv pro 9.1.1(33.2.0.157)

and problem still here.

no “next up”, no “plex recommend” in channel rows.

i’v noticed it stopped update contents in home screen few weeks back, but still functions as a shortcut, then i uninstall/reinstalled plex client, then the whole row in home screen just got wiped, no more plex in home screen anywhere, no channel, no play next. today i finally decided to wipe entire shield tv pro to start over, hope it may fix things, after apending an hour and half getting everything back where they were, i discoved nothing gets fixed.

then i discoved this thread… what a wast of night.

p.s. has anyone noticed, after recent update(not sure which one), when you done with plex, you have to click [back] like 3~4 times before it finally decided to quit and letting you back to android home screen?

p.p.s. got another tv runs with shield TV (no pro version, just tube) works fine with no probs.

for temp solution, i’m giving “Channel Connect for Plex” app a try, works fine so far, app icon is a bit “not there yet” but it does the job. i’m not sure if its gonna cost any money yet. in play store it says there is an " in app purchase" but i haven’t run acrossed it yet.

for anyone who is interested, here is the link:

however, TO PLEX EMPLOYEES:
THIS APP, EVEN IF ITS FREE ENTIRELY, AND WORKS LIKE A PEACH, DOES NOT MEAN YOU GUYS ARE OFF THE HOOK. PLEASE GET IT FIXED. WE DONT WANT NO 3RD-PARTY APP THAT MUCH. PLEASSSSE.

Just make sure y’all are aware of the apps privacy policy.

yea, like i said, not an optimal choice, just a make do.

That app is fantastic, no matter this bug or not. Nice find!

this workaround method is inconvenient and should remain temporary.

based on team plex’s efforts to locate and resolve the bug, and looking at their track records, i’d say it may not be as “temporary” as everyone wishs to be

I have the issue too and have been using Channel Connect for Plex for months now due to the issue. I’m not sure the issue is a Plex issue as at the exact same time Plex stopped working so did the Peacock app for me. Peacock initially disappeared from the list of channels that can be activated but after I factory reset my shield, it re-appeared and seemed to work as my shows re-appeared in my continue watching list. After watching a few episodes, however, I realised they weren’t updating on the homescreen and if I factory reset my Shield, Peacock always re-appears in the continue watching but never updates past the intitial status so looks like it could be a shield/android issue more than just a Plex issue.

Having said that, I paid the 5€ or whatever it was for Channel Connect for Plex and haven’t looked back since. It adds a lot more to the Shield homescreen and my Shield is now a Plex only device. Continue watching on my Shield never showed everything from Plex anyway so this is a better option for me.

This is what i’ve been saying all along, that I doubt it’s a Plex issue, and a Google/Nvidia issue.
