Nvidia Shield - very strange behavior viewing movie pre-play screens

I’m experiencing some very weird behavior while viewing pre-play screens for movies from a movie library hub on the home screen on my Nvidia Shield.

If I click on a movie in a home screen hub (e.g., recently added), the pre-play screen opens normally. If I then scroll down, for example to see the cast information or the related movies section, the display will often pop back up to the top of the screen all by itself. Sometimes I will see the first cast member blinking rapidly as if it is being updated while I’m watching it, then the screen jumps back to the top. If I scroll down again, it may jump back to the top by itself again, and sometimes it stays where I want it to.

If I close out of that movie’s pre-play screen and select a different movie from the same hub, it will open normally, then the display quickly changes back to the movie I was looking at previously. If I close and re-open, it will generally stay where it should be, but I can close and select another movie (even the first one I looked at) and experience all the same bizarre behavior all over again.

I can’t say exactly when this started, but it’s definitely one of the more recent client updates. I suppose it’s possible the server is part of the problem, but I don’t see the same behavior on any other client (Roku, Xbox, iOS, Plex Web). I also don’t see the same thing with TV shows – just movies as far as I can tell. I haven’t tried to replicate the problem from a library screen – so far just from a home screen hub.

I can pretty much reproduce this at will and am happy to send logs if that helps.

I occasionally have another problem where I see duplicates of some movies in the recently added hub. Not sure if this is related to the above issues.

Yes! Browsing TV shows is extremely unstable since Friday night for me. I’m seeing a lot of the same behavior on my 2019 Shield Pro.

In addition, deleting an episode of a TV show now reliably crashes me to the Shield homescreen.

Note: This behavior is affecting both TV shows stored in Samba shares, and also DVRed episodes on my attached SSD.

I have another oddity. May or may not be related to my earlier post, so am including it here to keep client-related things together. Changed the post title to reflect multiple apparent bugs with Nvidia Shield pre-play screen.

When looking at the pre-play screen for a movie, cast items are often duplicated. For example, the cast of Wonder Woman 1984 is duplicated many times (I didn’t count how many). For other movies, the cast is duplicated only one to three times. Once again, I can replicate this behavior at will.

The cast hub issue was fixed in a recent release, but I wanted to follow up on my original post. I was getting pretty frustrated with the bizarre behavior, looking through my logs to see if there were any clues on what was causing the problem, like database corruption. I don’t remember now whether I saw something there, or elsewhere, but I took a flyer and manually ran ‘analyze’ for all my libraries. That seemed to do the trick, because from that point everything started working normally. Strange, because analyze was set as a weekly butler function and the problem persisted across several weeks. Nevertheless, I’m glad to not be having the problem any more.
