Oculus Quest app?

It would be great if the Plex VR app was available on Quest.
I know I can to this via SkyBOX, but that is only single user. It is also possible via Bigscreen and remote desktop, but that is cumbersome to do.

Wow… I thought the whole idea of Plex was to get it on Every platform possible… give us the Go source code and we can do it ourselves it’s not rocket science.

I dont understand the problem. The Oculus Quest is the same device like the Oculus Go. Just release the existing Plex VR App for the Quest!
What is the problem? And why is here no dev or admin?

If you don’t like repeating yourself, then don’t. It’s as annoying for me to read as for you to write it.

You made yourself clear the first time. Many who keep posting requests are quite aware of the official statement, They (and now I among them) are using this forum (and elsewhere) to try to convince Plex management to change its mind.

The existence of that official statement doesn’t – and shouldn’t – stop Plex’s user base from trying to campaign for what it wants. Further, the statement clearly said “at this time” rather than “ever”, so the question is not “if” but “when”. And since the statement is now nearly a year old, maybe “at this time” is long past. Tthe Quest has turned out to be an unqualified hit, constantly selling as fast as they can be made… that wasn’t known last June when the statement was made.

Minds change. Markets change. Tactics change – sometimes quickly. The VR world could well explode once Facebook launches its Horizon platform – or it may not.

Plex already has my money as I bought a lifetime PlexPass sometime back. But I would happily contribute to a kickstarter project if the limiting factor is lack of developer resources. I don’t even care if there’s much new development, I’ll be happy with the minimal work needed to adapt the existing app to the Quest hardware.

In any case, please stop with the “reading difficulties” condescension. If you think it’s hopeless to get Plex management to change, that’s fine, just please get out of the way of those who disagree. If you really don’t like repeating yourself, nobody will mind if you stop.

If demand for VR support is demonstrated – and the community helps address the obstacles that may exist – then change can happen, Think of it like Andy’s campaign for a prison library in the movie “Shawshank Redemption”. It’s not possible … until it is.

I too hope that Plex will bring this to other devices. I have a lifetime membership, and I bought one for a friend because I liked it so much. However, being in the medical community I’ve been on isolation rotations for the hospital. At first I was keeping myself occupied by making 3D printed masks and fixing random stuff I’ve been meaning to fix. But now over the past week I could barely even roll out of bed. I think being alone everyday and not leaving your house for isolation gets to you eventually. Now we are dropping the isolation rotations and going back to full time at the hospital. But it would have been nice to watch movies with my parents who are of the high risk category. I told them to stay home and not go out at this time. At least they are together. I think Plex VR would have been nice to interact with them as I haven’t seen them in a couple of years now. It might be kind of fun to get to throw popcorn at my parents in a VR movie theater. Haha.

OMG! I just found something that may work!

There is a program on Steam called Bigscreen that will do VR viewing of desktop! You can watch with friends, and it’s free. Looks like its a Beta version. Maybe this is why Plex is not interested in providing this function anymore, but in either case Yay!!

as soon as plex do not want to do a client , use skybox there is a PC client to stream locally
in the player work great not as good as plex with library and stuff but enough to stream form PC to the quest.

Bigscreen is fantastic! but the sad reality is that it doesn’t work on Mac, and you need a speedy PC with a good graphic card to even run it. Its a good alternative but not a solution.

We need to press this issue, and attempt to have this placed back as a votable feature request. Maybe a campaign on Twitter / Reddit to do so?

Except Gear VR.

Oh, And Oculus Go VR…

Maybe everyone who saw the hedging in that language is holding out hope.
“at this time”
“I have no information to share”

Maybe they just won’t play nice with Facebook (who knows how long THAT deal was in the works?)
Maybe they wanted to wait and see which VR platforms were worth putting the development time.
Still, it’s good and proper for Plex to hear Quest users asking for a little love.

PlexPass holder since 4/13!

Just got a Quest and I was just shocked that there isn’t a Plex app for it.
What am I paying you people for?!

NO ONE wants Tidal.

Build features people WANT.
And…
I
WANT
THIS

Does anyone here have experience in side-loading the Go app into a Quest?

“Side-loading” is the practice of installing a app (in the form of an “apk” file) directly onto an Android-based device by transferring it directly from another device such as a PC using the USB cable. It bypasses the device’s official “store” to do things such as add Google apps to Chinese phones.

The process is a bit tricky but documented at this site as well as others. The PlexVR APK file is available from this and other sites.

I’d love to hear from anyone who had already done this. It would at least give a workable Plex-on-Quest experience until Plex finally decides to come back here after it’s finished discovering new useless streaming channels.

I will try it myself sometime in the next few weeks, time allowing. If I do I will report back here.

I’d like to think that since a year has passed and the Oculus platform has grown so significantly, that Plex developers would have a change of heart and re-support the platform.

Oculus allows Go apps to run on Quest, not sure what needs to be changed in their App Store listing but I can’t imagine it would be too difficult; the code is already there and working for the Go. Even multiplayer support!

You can’t develop for Oculus without getting in bed with Facebook. It’s a nonstarter.

I just tested this with various versions of the APK and none of them would load, just hangs at a black screen. Sad

Firstly Quest 2 has removed support for the Old Go APKs, but in better news, you can become a Quest developer with just contact details now and Apps can be distributed on SideQuest (or still as an APK on your site that you can use SideQuest to simplify the install of. If you’re not willing to get into the VR Niche any more, please do everything you can to make Plex integration from Bigscreen and Skybox great.

Just wondering if there was any official word from PLEX about its plans for the Quest 2 App. It would be a shame if they didn’t spend some time to get that audience. Playing though the browser is a bit lame.
