Offline playlists don’t show up

7.4 (21322) works perfectly and offline playlists work. If I use any other version my offline playlists are gone. Latest server version and this has gone on with every version that came out after 7.4.1. It expires in 8 days so offline playlists will be gone. Have tried so many fixes with uninstalls and reinstalls and sync settings.

No one else has this issue? I do, my wife does…all the devices we use have this issue. It is not an issue on 7.4 to this day. Any revision that has come out since, whether it be beta or release on the app store will not sync playlists.
Has anyone else run into this outside of me or can the developers offer anything to try?
Hard to believe it would be some “setting” I’m missing, knowing I can go back to 7.4 and have everything work perfectly. Anything above that will not work with downloaded playlists.

Totally agree, downloads & sync, 100% do not work properly. Here is the scenario: while on mobile device, like a tablet with Wi-Fi connection, download music and a movie or two. Great, it shows up in the downloads & sync folder on the device. Checking the server, it is clear that the server transcoded the movie and the music. The progress bar on the tablet showed that everything transferred. OK, right? Wrong!

Now, go to the airport, get on your plane and start the Plex app, select your user and you get the message that you are not connected. No problem, go to the left sidebar and pull down your menu. Now select downloads&sync. To your amazement you get a screen that says there is no content. Now you are thoroughly angry because there is 0% tech support to solve this issue. At your hotel room later that day, you connect to the hotel internet and then look at the downloads&sync folder. Yup, everything appears again. So what this means is that, yes, you can download content to your device, but, no, you cannot access it unless you are connected to the internet. Baffling concept.

And yes, while at the hotel doing this experiment in futility, you can turn off your WiFi connection while the app is running, close the app, open it again and the content WILL appear. Huh? But then reboot the tablet and try again while not connected and NOPE, it’s gone again.

So, this is clearly a coding issue on the Android app. This behavior is repeatable on both tablets and multiple phones.

Unfortunately, I do not expect this to be fixed as it is a long term problem that the Plex developers consider a ‘feature’.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I see the send beta feedback and all that good stuff but no replies. Anything after 7.4 breaks playlists but I never see anything commented about it. I’ll just stay on 7.4 until it’s not possible anymore. /sigh

It’s still an issue and I’m still going to keep the thread alive. 7.4, perfect. 7.12, still not fixed. What gives, devs?

Also having the same issue. Would appreciate a solution.

Still nothing from Plex? Staff, can you offer anything?

Yes I have this issue also.

Online, synced playlists show up on “Downloads & Sync” on the device.

Offline, and nope. Synced media still shows up, but playlists do not exist while offline.

It would be nice if the developers look into this issue. It has been a problem since v8.9.0.21537. That is the last reliable plex version that “offline” playlists actually work.

For anyone still looking for a solution, it seems like plex has another app called “PlexAmp” that solves all the issues. It doesn’t have the weird syncing issue, and you can download and play all of your playlists and it will show up the way you created your playlist. If you are a plex pass user, you should have full access to the app.
I know it’s not a good solution but it worked out well for me so just decided to share.

I use music video playlists at the gym for cardio, and I struggle to get them to work.

I had it working, as far as it downloaded a video playlist and I could play the videos offline.

The struggle is when it shows the content in “downloaded” but it disappears when the device is actually offline.

That just happened to me. I was trying to update . The content was up to date when online, but gone when to offline. I deleted the content and tried to download it (sync ) again. It said “download scheduled” and then “http response 400”.

I just uinstalled Plex on my iOS 14.5 iPad, and it seems to be downloading the playlist now. I’ll test it when it’s done.

I noticed that “downloads” changed to “downloads & sync” in the Plex interface. That might be an important detail but I don’t know why yet.

What a mess.

Update:

Plex Media Server converted the videos in my playlist into the format iOS uses, and the iPad Plex client downloaded them to my iPad. When my iPad is offline, I can see the videos in the “Downloads and Sync” section, but not the playlist. The options are at the bottom of the screen are “recommended” and “library”

So,

  • I cannot play the playlist in the order I spent about an hour putting them into.
  • I can’t play the playlist in shuffle order.
  • I can’t play the playlist at all.

I don’t see the point of being able to sync the playlist if you cannot use the synced video playlist.

Been a problem for me for over a year. Starting to wonder why I’m paying for this.

I certainly appreciate this post, because it gives me a way to listen to my playlists now - thank you very much. I don’t find that it’s the solution, but it certainly is a good way to get my music on my device for the offline listening experience. I’m glad you posted this!

Plexamp is only a sort of good solution. If you have large playlist, plexamp will not download the whole playlist. Also, if you have the same songs in multiple playlists, the songs in downloads multiple times. The plex app is much better in that regard because it only downloads the song once, and plex can download any size playlist. The issue with the OP is still a problem as plex doesn’t seem to support offline playlists.

I have been testing the app “plex amp” for a couple of weeks now. It will at least do what I have wanted the main plex app to do. It is sad though, that the actually working plex amp features are not already in the main app.

I can live with a bit of extra space used up by the songs downloaded more than once. What I cannot live with is not having my playlists available while my phone does not have a connection to the internet. That should seriously be fixed.

Yeah, Plex Amp gets the offline playlists but really…why can’t we just have it in the main app? Sync playlists, go offline and then…nothing. No one from Plex ever responds about fixing this, even though they ask you to report problems with their app. I’ve done standard versions and Testflights and never get responses. Other devs (even ones that are 1-man armies) respond, but Plex never has.

Plex team, I’m never letting this thread die. How come you don’t respond?

I did not respond because after I initially posted, I realized this topic is under ‘IOS’. [Yes, I know you were not asking me.]

The version I deal with is a problem under android also. Seems like either a primary code problem or a server issue.

A good alternative for me now is PlexAmp. I primarily listen to music on my phone and therefore do not need the full video watching of the main Plex app.

All good - is it working for you yet? I have installed the absolute latest beta on iOS and now the Playlists are there when I’m offline. Shows under Downloads → Items and is listed as a Playlist, where it used to have the actual Playlist icon on the bottom. So far this seems like it’s working as advertised. I haven’t tried the latest non-beta, but I am glad to see the Playlists are there.
I have been using PlexAmp and I do like it because it’s far more music-based and I like the controls better and seeing the lyrics easily.
At least this issue seems to be fixed…for now. I hope it stays fixed.
Thanks for all the responses, everyone!
