OMG Fix Android App ASAP

Current forum doesn’t contain android and ios subcategories, only tags are used. It would be better to create a separate topic with the same issue? I don’t think so.

And my issue happens with LTE connection too. Music stops after 20-40 minutes of playback when I’m not at home. Do you need logs of PMS?

And evidence… hehe, look at the player UI, when the playback is on, the track is cached (line is filled white at the center), so app plays the track from the cache most time. Cellular can be off, but the music is playing.

UPD: PMS logs. The issue occurs at Oct 16, 2019 14:57. Plex Media Server.log (795.6 KB)

You don’t have the same issue because you don’t have the same player. Your player isn’t running the same code. Your phone isn’t running the same Operating System. Please make your own topic with the correct tag(s). Provide samples, logs, and steps to reproduce.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed, but everything has been working for me. Just drove almost 2 hours round trip and music never stopped playing.

Well, I do see I’m running an updated version of the Android app now (7.22.0). It upgraded October 3rd. So, it’s either that or the voodoo that I attempted yesterday. :stuck_out_tongue:

What was the voodoo that you attempted?

I don’t know if that’s what worked or not. It specifically says that audio sessions are exempt.

There are 2 issues currently. The one related to the Terminate Sessions setting in PMS is a PMS bug. Setting that value to 0 is a temporary fix for that issue. The second issue is with the music player used in the Android app. This player is also used by the iOS app so it may be the same issue, although I haven’t seen the same specific error in iOS logs. For Android, it occurs when the app losses the connection to the server, it is unable to reconnect to that server and ends up in a loop trying to connect and eventually stopping playback. We are still investigating why it can’t reconnect.

Will this issue affect synced tracks as well?

No. Synced tracks would be a different issue. There is 1 I’m investigating related to shuffling synced content. Is that your scenario?

I cannot reproduce this issue playing all morning over Sprint cellular data. I have use low quality over cellular turned on. FLAC files transcoded to Opus.

Android App: 7.23.0.13018 (likely a beta version)
PMS: 1.18.0.1944

I don’t have that “terminate sessions” field in server settings. I downgraded to ver 1.14 if that matters.

Yes, that fits my scenario. One of them at least.

That’s quite an old release!

Anything over 1.14 is unstable. I was running 1.18 up until this past weekend and got tired of the service hanging every 2-3 days. Rolled it back. I don’t recall babysitting an app as much as I do Plex. It’s getting old. But no other media server is supported on MyCloud Mirror otherwise I would’ve bolted a long time ago.

Today I reproduced the same bug on Android. Are you satisfied? 7.22.1.12828, Mi A2 Lite with Android 9.0, different cellular operator, stable LTE

One more effect is discovered. The music often skips 1-3 seconds forward or back (sync issue?). I have a video, but can’t upload directly.

While you’re looking at shuffle, there’s also some strange behavior I’ve noticed with artist shuffle. What I’ve seen is that the first page of the auto-generated shuffle playlist is typically the same music in a different order every time. I’ve tested by taking an artist with ~300 tracks, focusing on five tracks that appear in the first shuffle page, and then hitting the artist shuffle button 15 times. In every case, the five that I chose to focus on are in the first page of the playlist but in a different order. So there is shuffling occurring, but it seems like it’s only shuffling partially.

I frequently just shuffle an artist and I was finding that the same tracks were always part of the initial playback, so I tested it and found that I wasn’t imagining that. Currently, I always just hit the playlist button after shuffling and skip to the last track on the first page in order to get some variety when I shuffle an artist.

So far with running server 1.14 and Android 1.17 I was able to drive home from work last night and to work this morning with no issues. Fingers crossed.

Can you please start a new thread with the PMS logs? I know we added a newer shuffle algorithm so maybe something isn’t working right.

On the topic of the suddenly stopping playback I’ve noticed something!

Usually I have the phone locked in my pocket while listening to music on the go. Now if the playback stops I found out that I only have to quickly unlock the phone, wait for a few seconds without pressing any button and then the playback will resume where it had left off!

It works as a workaround for me right now but would obviously love it not stopping in the first place.

Verify Plex is allowed to use battery in the background. You might want to try turning off battery optimizations for Plex. App info, Advanced, Battery.
