Android Plex app has been working great for the week or two since I set up my Plex server, then suddenly yesterday has a problem playing most synced music files in a smart playlist. It either crashes and restarts the app, or gives the error “An error occurred while playing this item”. This error repeats over and over as the app attempts to play each mp3 in the synced playlist, until I kill playback or force stop the app.
Playing non-synced mp3s (i.e. streaming from my server) in the app seems to work just fine with no errors or crashes.
Troubleshooting steps: Deleted the synced playlist from phone (verified that it was no longer taking up the 5 GB of space for the mp3 & flac files in the playlist.) Readded and resynced the playlist - no change in behavior. Cleared Plex app’s cache, then cleared storage, uninstalled app. Rebooted phone. Reinstalled app, signed in, resynced playlist - same behavior.
Error started yesterday, hadn’t installed any Android updates before that for quite a while (i.e. nothing has changed on my phone recently that could cause this issue.) While troubleshooting today I did install the latest Android security patch: July 5, 2020. Didn’t seem to affect the issue for good or ill.
However, it looks like Google Play did update the Plex app on 7/6/2020 to 8.3.0. It’s entirely possible that I hadn’t tried playing synced playlists since that update, until yesterday 7/9.
This is part of the debug log where the repeated error message is seen. I can provide more of the log if it helps:
(apparently as a new user I can’t post the debug log?)

This is happens to me as well. Music plays fine when not synced, but give the “error occurred while playing this item” when synced. Plexamp, however, has no issues with synced music.
Thanks for the tip! I had heard about Plexamp but didn’t realize it could be a possible solution to my problem. I just downloaded Plexamp and checked it out.
One issue I ran into right away: I have one huge playlist I call “Favorite Tracks” - it’s a total of 596 tracks (so far), and equals 39 total hours of music. (It’s like my own curated radio station, consisting of only songs I like a lot.)
When I try to sync that large playlist, there’s a slider where you can choose how much of your playlist to download…but that slider tops out at 24 hours. So I’m only going to get about 2/3rds of my playlist downloaded. Better than the main Plex app, since downloads do appear to work OK, but still frustratingly limited for my use-case.
Same here. Just noticed it on last Android update (8.5.0.19697(bdf62378) 17 Aug). Songs that I have synced before the update still plays but for any song synced after that I get “An error occurred while playing this item.”
Have reinstalled the app, restarted phone, updated server on Nvidia Shield but no luck.
Also experiencing this issue. I am unable to play any synced audio on my android phone (8.5.0.19697 bdf62378), even after disabling the audio sync. My music library doesn’t even show as an option anymore either, not sure if that is related.
I’m able to stream video without issue to my phone, and I can stream the audio and music to other devices (roku, web interface). Plex is hosted on a NAS with version 1.19.5.3112
Same here, everything was working fine while the app on my phone decided to update. After the update (to 8.5.0.19697 bdf62378) I am not able to play synced .mp3 anymore… Playback streaming content from the server works fine. Tried to uninstall the app from my phone but it did not fixed the problem.
Same problem here. Latest version of the app, songs played fine until today. These songs are part of a smart playlist that I have synced with my mobile device
Same problem here, synced music won’t play! WTF. Music that isn’t synced works fine in the app. Movies are no problem either. Tried reinstalling the app, doesn’t fix it, PlexAmp doesn’t fit my needs, the standard Plex app was fine! Stupid problem to have… This needs to be fixed
Also noticed that on the phone that I cannot play newly synced songs Plex initially tries to convert media, it shows " x% - converting (0.0x) from [device name]" although it is set to keep original audio quality. This is a Xiaomi Mi 9T device with Android 10 last security patch installed 2020-07-01.
I have also a Pixel XL running Lineage Marlin OS with Android 9 and I don’t have the issue. And Plex don’t try to convert media during sync, as expected.
Anyone in the Plex team would like to keep us informed if this is planed to be fixed shortly? This is the main reason why I both the Lifetime plex pass 2 weeks ago…
By the way, every member of the family have that problem, not just me.
After years of using Plex for free I finally bought the lifetime Plex Pass a couple of days ago to use the sync feature on all my Android devices which I found out it doesn’t work, now I regret it and I’m thinking of asking for a refund.
Just to be clear… The sync feature doesn’t work in Android, it appears that is working and didn’t throw any errors but not even the folders where the files are supposed to be downloaded exist, it can’t even create the folders, added to the app storage permissions and nothing, still doesn’t work.
And the Plex amp app sucks… My plan was sync all my mp3 files and use Poweramp, but so far is not working.
Any chance that this will be fixed soon or should I start requesting a refund?
And yesterday my wife wanted to go for a walk and found out on her S20 the sync also crashed. So it is not just my phone. Anybody listening and working on the issue?
