On Deck, Continue Watching & Recently Added

I wonder if the Android developer owns an Android device? Wanna chip in on a FireStick?
I can’t imagine they test the beta and think, perfect 3 duplicate rows. Who wouldn’t want that?

In case you missed an item somehow in one of the first two rows. It makes sense, if you think about it.

… and to think we were worried about the secret changes coming that Plex was so proud to almost leak…

See? Nothing to worry about.

Mind the snark, please. Taking a comment about a previous version and applying it to a newer version is disingenuous.

We all use Plex, but can’t replicate every situation, set up, or environment in house. Sometimes we’re aware of an issue, but don’t feel it’s a blocker, and will fix in a subsequent release. We’re hoping to have some more news to share about the changes we promised very soon

Again, mind the snark, please. Yes, everyone in the Android team has an Android device, including Fire TV devices (across varying generations)

And yet they put out an app that shows duplicate RA rows. I understand that it’s a beta version but the production version is no better.

I find it hard to believe that not one device in the Plex developers’ collection exhibited the inconsistent behaviour that many of us have reported. And if it did show up, it wasn’t considered a “blocker” for release - beta or production version. The home page is the showcase, the first impression, when you open Plex. It used to simple, clean, and easy to configure if you so desired. It’s a long way from that in it’s present state.

As I mentioned in the original post, we’re working towards a much more configurable and cleaner home screen, which gives you the control as to which hubs appear in the library recommended screen, on your home screen, and the home screen of users you share with.

I appreciate your enthusiasm for all of these exciting cool features you have promised, and I hope they are all you expect them to be.

But it’s been over two months since your initial post, and the “Universal Continue Watching” feature, was just released as an experimental opt-in feature about a week ago. I can’t even use the experimental feature, because I need to have “Automatically Manage” enabled on the home page, which gives me the dreaded multiple Recently Added hubs (which most of this thread has been about, even though you barely mentioned it in your initial post.)

For two months, those of us with multiple libraries have had the exact opposite of what your goal is. The home page is not clean and configurable in a lot of apps, by either the admin of the server or the users.

I hope the roll-out of the new experience is better planned and functional than the temporary, interim steps you have forced on us. Two months may be a brief inconvenience in the programmer’s world, but it’s a century of frustration from a user’s viewpoint.

It would be nice if it were an option by library in configuration:

Do you want these library items displayed in recommendations?

  • No
  • Yes - Combined with libraries of a similar type
  • Yes - As a separate line entry

If it were a library option, it would give a server owner full control over whether or not to group them. For example, I actually would prefer for my DVR items to be separated from other TV items that I add because far more gets added there over time, and it drowns out anything else I add daily.
For movie types, I would elect to combine those for my 3D library, but not to combine them with my 4k stuff.

Universal Continue Watching didn’t sound great when I first thought about it, but the idea of eliminating a line to add one or two more items to a different line does sound appealing. I’m going to investigate enabling that later today.

(sigh) – I don’t know where I should report this “bug”, but I’ll put it here for now, because it’s “Recently Added” related.

I decided to try again to customize the home page on the Android TV app, to eliminate the extra RA hubs. I removed all but a single Movie hub, and all but a single TV hub - after all, all of them were showing the same content.

Initially, I thought it had worked - the hubs were showing a “combined” Recently added,

But, after navigating away from the home page, then returning, the RA hub had changed - now it was showing content from only one library. Moving away and back to the home page, and the hubs would show content from another library. As far as I can tell, the combined RA hub I thought I had is gone forever, and my home page shows an RA hub chosen randomly from the available library types

On top of that, it added a duplicate Recently Added music hub - that’s new. I’ve always had just one hub for that library. I only have one music library, so that can’t be part of the problem.

Another glitch to add to the list.

I mentioned that new feature in another thread. You never know what library is going to be in the RA row.

No “snark,” but please do not patronize your patrons.

We know RA can work properly, as in the past. We know we had it like that. We know it can be returned to that state while you work on YOUR problems with multiple duplicate RA lists.

I encourage everyone to copy and paste our request, below. It may encourage DaveBinM to pass along our desire to fix RA sooner rather than later…or never.

My recommendation is to just sideload 8.11 so you can recombine the hubs and keep using that until Plex figures this out.

Let me give you the land land phone number to a 76 year old friend that doesn’t have a cell phone 'cause they’re too ‘complicated’ - and you can talk him through it… K?

You make a good point. But that might also be a case where you should start with a sideload of a known good version and bypass potential “joys” from updates in advance. I was on 7.27 for quite awhile. Just update the player when it’s required, which is actually pretty rare if you don’t update your server.

(Also I deal with a predominately rural population in my job so, yes.)

Thanks for the recommendation but since I’m a paid in full Lifetime Plex Pass member it would be foolish and a waste of time to fix problems created by a business that I am a CUSTOMER of.

I will wait out this mess. However I have a recommendation for anyone wondering about using Plex or getting a Plex pass. This is the first time I have ever recommended NOT to use Plex. Until the time that Plex fixes this RA fiasco, my recommendation for new users is to stay away from using Plex.

And furthermore, to the Plex Executive team - Keith Valory - Chief Executive Officer, Scott Olechowski - Chief Product Officer & Co-founder, Elan Feingold - Chief Technology Officer & Co-Founder, Scott Hancock - Vice President of Marketing, Shawn Eldridge - Vice President of Strategic Alliances, Dean Mayer - VP, Finance & Corporate Controller:

Wouldn’t it be more foolish to suffer while you “wait out this mess”, when you can have everything working normally until then?

I would guess that almost everyone running a plex server could manage side loading an app.

I only share my server with 6 people, and I doubt that even one of them would consider messing with their phone or Android TV device to get rid of the multiple hubs.

In the last month, there has been 4 updates to the “official” Plex amp for Android, and 9 updates to the “Beta” app. Not one of them has even mentioned a glimmer of hope for a repair of the “Home Page” in the release notes, and it certainly wasn’t an update that didn’t make into the release notes.
