Only Some Named Seasons

Server Version#:1.24.2.4973
Player Version#:4.59.2

For some reason, some of the seasons shown are given their name and others use only their number. See image below. Something similar also happened to another season, where it was showing all the season’s with names until I changed the agent (only 2 of 3 seasons we’re being picked up, but that’s another story).

Season 2 path - /home/user01/tv/American Horror Story/Season 2/
Freak Show path - /home/user01/tv/American Horror Story/American.Horror.Story.S04.1080p
Season 5 path - /home/user01/tv/American Horror Story/Season 5/

This seems to suggest that following the naming convention with folders being named “Season XX” forces that to be the label whereas, lacking that, Plex identifies the season by something else and gets the name from the agent. With this in mind, with my earlier instance of the issue, I tried to set the folder name to the season name, but this resulted in the season not being picked up at all.

So, I’m a bit lost! Any suggestions would be appreciated!

No, there’s no such dependency.
Does this hiccup persist if you refresh the show’s metadata?
From what I can see, not all seasons have their titles translated… there seem to be some translations which only have proper season titles for some seasons. Though I assume your library is looking for English metadata?

PS: for best results you should still stick to Season 04 instead of American.Horror.Story.S04.1080p as season folder names

I’ve refreshed the meta data and unfortunately nothing changed. I’ve double checked TVDB (American Horror Story - TheTVDB.com) and it has the season number and name, so I’d expect that, if anything.

Yes, definitely looking for English.

Plex will only use the season folder to properly layout / structure the show. That folder’s name has never been used as the actual season label.

Which agent are you using for that library?

Plex Documentation

Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files

  • Use the new TV agent (which is now the default).
  • As @tom80H mentions, use “Season XX.” Use two digits for the season number.
  • Make sure you have selected “Use Season Titles” in the library’s advanced settings.
  • Rescan the library and refresh metadata after making any changes.
  • If Plex still does not label things correctly, Plex Dance the entire show.

Thank you!

  1. Updated season folders.
  2. Changed agent to match suggestion.
  3. Confirmed “use season titles” is checked.
  4. Rescanned.
  5. Refreshed Meta data.
    → Lost all season titles!
  6. Plex dance.
    → No change

To confirm:

  • Folders are now all in this format: /home/user01/tv/American Horror Story/Season 01/
  • Agent selected: image
  • Season titles on: image

Just double-checked… it appears Plex can only get the season titles if you’re using TMDB season ordering. I’m not sure if that’s due to some API restriction w/ TVDb or for some other reason. Using TMDb episode order will automatically populate available season names.

That did the trick! I changed the episode ordering for the specific show, refreshed the meta data and it all updated.

Thank you very much for your help!

N.B.
(In case anyone has a similar problem) I mentioned another show earlier in the thread, one that had the same issue. I went to do the same to that but the option for episode ordering wasnt there. I think this is because I had previously forced it to match with an agent other than the default. So, 3 dots, Fix Match, Search Options, change agent to default, pick a match and then follow steps above.

Which is your default episode ordering?

Plex TV Series.

“Plex TV Series” is the name of the metadata agent.
I’d like to know the “episode ordering” which has been set in the properties of your tv show library.

Ah, sorry mate, got myself confused. TheTVDB.

So the library is already set to TheTVDB and now you had to set the individual show to TheTVDB as well, in order to get season titles?

I had to use TMDB to fix it, my library was using TVDB. Although, I have actually just swapped the whole library to TMDB now, anyway.

Ahh, that makes sense. :thanks:

Careful, the episode order of some shows is different between the two sites.
Most often it affects specials in Season 00, but sometimes it can also shift episodes by some numbers.

Ah, thanks for the heads up, mate. I’ll bear that in mind.
