Options toggle to always ignore / skip one-star-rated songs

Everyone has tracks on an album they never want to hear, a little QoL addition would be the choice via switch in the app options (not a basic always-applied setting, for folks who use their one-stars for other reasons) to always skip any tracks you have rated one star. I use the Plexamp 5 stars smart playlist a lot for my ‘Favourites’ and thought this inversion might also be of help.

Have you thought about making a smart playlist where the rule is to match any song greater than one star? Elan showed how to do that and more in his Pro Week 22 video.

I’m finally working on going through and rating all the tracks in my music library. There’s not a lot so far, but there are SOME songs that I just don’t like. Obviously I could just delete the songs, but I’d prefer to still have an entire album even if there is 1 or 2 songs I don’t like. How about having a setting in PlexAmp or the server itself where you could say shuffles/radio/mixes will exclude tracks with a 1 star rating. That way I think those features would be more useful and more enjoyable, since they won’t have those songs that you don’t actually like at all popping up from time to time. The setting could maybe have an option to select the star rating level that you want to exclude. 1 star would be great for me, but maybe other people would want to exclude anything with 1 or 2 stars.

Plexamp is doing this already by default.

I may not have rated enough tracks or used the radio or mix features enough to know about those for sure, but if I push the play button on an artist page, or I download a few hours of an artist shuffle, it absolutely does include 1 star tracks.

I think
Settings - Server - ‘Show Advanced’ - Library - “Enable smart shuffling on artists and smart music playlists”
needs to be activated.

I do have that enabled. It says it “prefers” highly rated, popular, and less heard tracks. And it does seem to do a good job of that. But I’m looking for a way to completely exclude the 1 star tracks when shuffling, mixing, playing radio.

According to @elan this is the case.

If you want an investigation into why it doesn’t happen in your library, come over to https://forums.plex.tv/tags/c/plex-labs/16/plexamp and provide your plexamp logs

Thanks

it doesn’t exclude them, it just … demotes them in smart shuffle. library radio completely excludes them.

Just curious, do all radios exclude it? or only Library Radio?

Either way, if it’s the case that shuffles do not exclude it, I’ll go back to my original feature suggestion of having this as an option. Thanks!

Personally I don’t rate my music as poor or bad at all, all my ratings are for how good they are, going from 1 to 5. So I wouldn’t want this feature myself.

I’m also curious if its just 1 star tracks or also 1 star albums ?

My curiosity is around a potential workaround for xmas music ended up on radios ? If 1 star albums where ignored from radios I’d just 1 star all the xmas albums until plex gives us a way to control what we can exclude ourselves

I only use ratings to control my smart playlist so this could be a good workaround for me.

EDIT: never mind – confirmed setting a 1 star album has no effect :frowning:

Correct!

I also rate a song by how much I like it, from 1-5. For me, 1 star represents songs I don’t actually like at all, I know everyone uses the ratings their own way, so it the request is just for an optional feature, similar to smart shuffle. That way if people don’t want it at all, it can default to being turned off. But if some people don’t like 1 star or 2 star songs, they could set it to exclude them.

I’ve got some albums where I really dislike some tracks. It would be great if there was an option in Plex to skip tracks rated one star, whether in a random mix or even an album.

Or is there a sneaky way to do this already?

I’ve also wished for something like this–any way to skip tracks with some particular trait. In my case, I basically never ever want to hear tracks that have the genre “Interview,” “Commentary,” or “Skit.”

I tried to answer the question of how to avoid your 1-star songs.
It’s not a checkbox option though. It’s a filter.

The concept is you want to filter out the chaff. So when you look at your Library, instead of looking at ALL tracks set the Advanced Filter to
Track Rating is greater than 1 star.
Below is what that looks like in Plex For Mac

That’s easy if the metadata is there. Add one or more filters like above for
Track Genre is not Commentary

You can save the result as a playlist and filter that by album or have a DJ mix those.

On the subject of 5-star music, may I suggest Coldplay at Glastonbury last week in 4K from iPlayer? iykyk

Filters are very useful but inconvenient, and you can’t use all Plex music playback features if you have to filter first. For example I would like to just search for an album and hit Play and have it skip unwanted tracks (bad genre, 1-star rating, whatever) automatically. I would like to start an “Artist Radio” in Plexamp and have it skip unwanted tracks automatically. That’s why some kind of library-level configuration would be great.
