Server Version#:1.24.2.4973-7000
Player Version#:Browser App
In order to do the DSM7 udate I unistalled plex (selecting uninstall only) then did the DSM 7 upgrade and installed plex manually using the package from the Plex download site.
I got the error saying that the plexmediaserver didn’t have access to the folders so gave it full access to that.
I thern did the Plex install again but got a message about the media folders so gave RW access to them and did the reinstall again.
I now have a Plex server with the same name as my NAS device rather than my previous name of “NAS-Plex” and the new one doesn’t have media associated with it.
The new server “knows” about the users I have set up.
I tried foillowing the instructions about claiming a server and getting the claim code but this still connects me to the new Plex server not my original one.
In setting the new server shows as having a tick and a lock, but the original one has a Red triangle against it.
Is there anyway to get back to my original Plex server?
There are only 2 conditions where the first attempt to use the claim token won’t work.
-
You are migrating while claiming and the migration itself takes more than 5 minutes. The claim token has a 5 minute expiration.
-
The installer cannot communicate with Plex.tv to sign into your account from the Syno itself.
If you can recall,
-
Did you uninstall PMS before you upgraded to DSM 7?
-
Do you remember if, at any point, you hit “Repair”
-
Lastly, when you look at the “Plex” shared folder, is your metadata still in there?
Hi @ChuckPa ,
Thank you for the speedy reply!
- Yes I uninstalled Plex before doing the DSM7 upgrade (I selected the “uninstall only” option.
- I didn’t hit repair for Plex. I did attempt to repair Mosquitto MQTT package but that didn’t work so I uninstalled Mosquitto. This was after the DSM7 upgrade and before uninstalling Plex. I also rebooted the Synology NAS between removing Mosquitto and uninstalling Plex. But, no I didn’t try to do a repair on Plex.
- Under /Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Metadata I have folders called Movies, Albums, Artists, TV Shows and Collections. All have these have folders under then and following the structures down you do eventuially get to files, so yes it looks like all the meta data is still there.

The screen shot shows the PMS “knows” about the NAS-Plex server (the original one I want) but can “see” it for some reason.
When I said the claim token didn’t work, I just meant that it didn’t allow me to connect to the NAS-Plex PMS server, sorry that wasn’t very clear.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
OK, now we know where we stand.
The prerequisite to my actions here:
Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server / Preferences.xml
MUST exist.
This being the case,
-
Uninstall the package with the ERASE option to remove this errant PMS installation.
-
Verify your “Plex” share is named
Plexorplex. If it’s namedPLEXthen rename it (PLEX -> Plex-temp -> Plexstyle to make DSM happy) and fix that. The name it was installed with on DSM 6 wasPlexand that’s what I look for
-
When you next install 1.24.2.4973, upon detecting:
- a valid `Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml
- No other PMS installations on the host (hidden or otherwise)
- It will automatically start migration.
-
It will check for Full Control by “PlexMediaServer” for the Plex shared folder , including all sub-folders and files
-
It will spot check down 5 levels to verify further.
-
when all criteria are satisfied, It will begin the ‘migration’ process.
- It will sit at “Installing” for as long as it takes to complete the task. Don’t restart the NAS regardless what DSM 7 reports UNTIL you’ve actually verified, in Resource Monitor, user
PlexMediaServerisn’t actively doing anything (chown, mv, find, and realpath are the most common processes)
You may monitor progess in another browser window. Plex/Migration.log
It’s done when it finishes “cleaining” /volumeX/Plex
Upon completion,
-
You’ll have a new shared folder PlexMediaServer
a. This is the Application Data only. (so you can easily make backups)
b. It’s not for media. Use the now abandoned “Plex” share if you wish -
All traces of PMS (the program) will have been removed, leaving only those files, if any, you placed there.
Hi @ChuckPa ,
That worked perfectly - thank you so much for your help you have been brilliant!
The only sign now of the mess I made is that I had 2 authorised (server) devices
Is it safe to just click on the red cross on the one I don’t want (SynologyNAS1) in Settings - Authorised Devices and will this also remove the “duplicate” Movies (SynologyNAS1) from the “Home - Side Menu” (as the real one is "Movies (NAS-Plex)?
You have been great - thanks again for you help.
Hi @trumpy81 and @ChuckPa ,
I deleted the additional server (SynologyMAS1) and restarted and all traces of this server have gone and my original one is working fine.
Thank you for your help it was greatly appreciated.
