Other videos not showing up

I have a Plex category that adds videos from some misc. folders. For some reason when I scan these folders some videos show up and others are missing.

In the image the files with a green dot appear in the Plex library but the others do not. They are all in the same folder and are the same file format. The only thing I wonder about is the filenames. I’ve tried renaming one but it doesn’t make a difference. Any ideas?

I’m on Windows 10 for both client and server.

Are they in a “Other Videos” library? You said so in the title, but I am just double checking.

All I can think of is that they start with a number. Plex might be seeing that, thinking they are Episode numbers, and… what, ignoring them? That shouldn’t happen in an “other Videos” library…

Yes they are in the other videos library in another subfolder. That leads me to believe the file tree structure is not a problem. As an experiment I eliminated all numbers from a duplicate of one of the files and it showed up. Simply renaming the file didn’t work. I guess I have to make duplicates of the rest and then rename them. Weird.

Plex can somehow detect when a file was renamed, vs a new file put in it’s place. So if it ignored the file due to the name, it will probably still ignore it once it is renamed.

Kind of annoying, but helpful if you are touching up a filename, and want Plex to keep track of the file it knew about.

I went ahead and duplicated the files and simplified the names but still missing one file and others are named differently in plex. Is there any way to manually add a file to a Plex collection? It seems silly to spend all this time to guess how to get plex to recognize them. I feel like I’m doing a puzzle challenge n a game lol.

If there is a manual way, I will be greatly surprised. Plex is an automatic kind of scanner, and it does things its own way. If an item doesn’t show up, Server Logs might indicate why, but those things are rather noisy and I don’t know what to look for.

I’ve got an “other videos” library where I dump files from my Drone and my GoPro, and so far I have not had any issues getting the files to show up. And these files are often just big sequences of numbers.

Does anyone else have an opinion on why a file might not show up in “Other Videos”?

Don’t know if this is your problem, and can’t explain why it’s doing this…but if I’m looking at my “Other Videos” with the filters at top-left indicating “All/Movies/By Title” not all of my videos are showing up.

If I change “Movies” to “Folders” then my missing videos in the root folder are showing up (count goes from 23 to 48, which matches the count in Windows File Explorer).

Came across that accidentally. Bug? Feature?

As an aside, my prior tactic was to put those missing videos as part of a collection, then I could select the collection and see them inside that.

I’ve actually had something similar happen… Create other videos library and name it what I want for “other stuff” Maybe 50 videos total for that library… Later, I would add more videos to that… scan and the new videos wouldn’t show… only the existing ones… The ONLY way I could get the new videos to show was to delete that other videos library, create it again, and then everything would show.
