Pause/Resume makes my videos stuttering

Server Version#: 1.41.1.9057 on synology NAS
Player Version#: Up-to-date on xbox store

I migrate from Kodi to Plex server a few weeks ago.

Kodi working like a charm, but i really want to make my library a better look, so this is why i decide to migrate.

I play medias on my Xbox Series X, connected to my local wifi in 5Ghz. Kodi let me play all my videos without encoding like a charm (even 4k with a high bitrate).

For Plex, it’s very similar, i didn’t have any problem to read from my server, any videos will works very good, without encoding too, direct play activated.

BUT, there is a but… If i paused any video and i resume it, i’ve got a stuterring problem. Like a frameskip or something. It happens with any video i play. And the only way i’ve found to fix it, is to quit the playback, come back to the current page of plex menu (on the movie, or series page) and open again the video. It’ll resume the video as it should, and the stuterring problem disappear.

It’s very annoying, like the Xbox Player lose the framerate of the video after a pause, or something.

I would really love to uninstall kodi and use plex anytime, as i also paid for it, but for now i’m note sure to continue if the problem still there… Too bad as Plex working really good if i didn’t pause videos.

Hope someone can help me go through this.

Thanks by advance,

From your description of the issue, it sounds like Plex may be having an issue with it’s cache data.

When you pause the video, normally Plex will continue to cache the playback data for a short time. If Plex is unable to do that, then it will be forced to reprocess the video on the fly and you may see that as stuttering, as it tries to catch up again.

Open File Station on the NAS and right click on the PlexMediaServer folder and select Properties.

Then on the Permission tab, click to highlight PlexMediaServer and then click on Edit.

Make sure ALL Permission are selected and click on Done.

Then you MUST enable Apply to this folder, sub-folders and files and then click on Save.

That will then apply the correct permissions to all folders/files within the PlexMediaServer folder. It will take some time to complete, so be patient.

Next, before you try playing and pausing a file, make sure you locate that file in your library (Plex/Web) and then click on the vertical ellipsis and select Analyse.

Then play the file for a minute or two, pause the file for 10 secs or so and un-pause the file.

Did it stutter when you resumed playback?

If yes, then that is probably not the issue.
If no, then that is probably the issue, in which case you should analyse your entire library. Wait until it completes.

Let me know if any of the above makes a difference, thanks.

Hello,

First, thanks for your reply.

I’ve check permissions for this folder, and by default it was set to Read & Write

So i’ve changed them to full control

I’ve start the analyze for some files i’ll read tonight.

I’ll be update to give you a feedback after tonight when i’ll watch some episodes of my current series.

Thanks !
