Performing library scan the PC powers off

Previously was running without issue on version Linux Mint 19.3 / Cinnamon.
Now when performing a library scan, the PC just completely powers off within 15-30 minutes. I just installed a new installation on the same exact PC hardware now running on Linux Mint 21 / Cinnamon (details above).

Any suggestions would be helpful. If any other information is needed please reach out to me.

Thanks

Check for dust bunnies / overheat condition.

Any non-privileged application such as PMS cannot tell the OS what to do.

Failure to remain cool will cause the OS to take drastic measures to save the hardware. This will cause a shutdown if CPU temp exceeds 95C

Yep, this is definitely not a Plex problem.

This is how I would attack it…

  • First check for heat problems like @ChuckPa said. See if you can install a utility to monitor CPU heat and watch it while Plex works, too.
  • Try running with only one of the RAM sticks at a time to see if one of them is going bad.
  • Try another PSU.

But, since the problem happens reproducibly after the system has been working hard for a little while, it sure seems like a heat problem.

Modern CPUs will cut their own power to keep heat in check if needed, so I am surprised the system gets to the point of shutting down.

Well looks to be dust bunny related. While the chassis was pretty clean the CPU heat sync was not. I cleaned it up and used a CPU stress tester and Psensor utility to run and watch the temperature and ran it for more than 30 minutes for all 6 cores at 100% and the temp never exceeded 59c. No issues. Thanks for the tip and the support.
