Sure. I use my DiskStation mostly for my backups where I really want to have proper redundancy and make sure nothing bad happens to the data.
I previously had my media library on an external drive connected on a computer. No need for backup there since it’s mostly copies of media files I have elsewhere in other formats. I simply moved the drive from the computer to the Synology Disk Station to run Plex from there. This made the transfer and setup easy without having to eat-up the space on the RAID array that I use for my backups.
@cortig From what I’ve seen DSM7 seems to be restricting the USB to a more secure system and therefore for only transferring data to the Synology. I don’t know if this will be the case in the final release though.
If it is the case and you would still like to run Plex on your Synology, then it maybe easier to expand your RAID array. I use to have a DS918+ and that ran both my backups and with Plex and my media running okay.
I now have a DS1621+ which I use not just as a backup, but to have my desktop PC’s (6 PC’s) diskless. It also runs Plex with my media as well.
Don’t get me wrong. Plex is overall running just fine for me and accessing all my media from the external USB drive. It’s just unable to delete files from the Plex UI unless I manually edit the permissions through FIleStation on the DSM every time I add files to the drive. Tedious for sure, but not impossible. With ACL, you can set the permissions to be inherited automatically so I’d never have to modify the permissions. (and with DSM6, Plex was running as a full user and not an internal user, so aI was simply adding the files to the drive as the Plex user — which is no longer possible in DSM7).
It’s quite possible, although I suspect it’s more of a limitation than a bug (since their support page states I can’t use ACL from a usbshare. I don’t understand why they prevent it though. It doesn’t make much sense to me.
Hello, Mr. ChuckPa:
I follow all your instructions above. However, using DSM7 Synology Photos, it will only allow me to sync from my phone to my “/photo” folder. If I move all my uploaded photos from there to my (using your recommendations for Shared Folders) new “Photos” folder, will my phone be able to (using Synology Photos) access my Photos folder on my DS220+ and make them viewable to me remotely?
Thank you so very much for your patience and your help!!!
Hi there… recently updated to DSM7 (RC) and I‘m also struggling with my photos on the DiskStation getting them shown on Plex.
I organize my photos in the system created folder from the photostation / photos app. All my other stuff (movies, videos, music, etc.) are stored in selfcreated folder and are working fine again with PLEX. But I also wonna use the the photos app and my photos in PLEX. Is there really no way to get both things running, do I have to decide have them working with PLEX when moving the files to my other shared folder but in that case I can‘t use the Photos Mobile app or leave them in system folder to get the app working but PLEX can‘t show the photos when stored there?!
Historically, it’s always been problematic to use the pre-defined Synology shared folders for any media because of the eventual permissions problems with Plex caused by the Synology tools (which claim exclusivity)
May I make the following recommendation?
Create a shared folder of your liking
Grant permission for yourself and user “PlexMediaServer” (system internal user) to read
Add the new location to each appropriate Library folder setting in PMS
Move your media to the share(s)
As the media moves, PMS will catch it moving from one to the other.
