I’ve been researching some discrepancies in video resolution for a couple of “4K” movie files. Two in -particular are clearly affected by this inconsistency.
Here’s what I see:
Movie #1: 65
- Width 3516
- Height 1608
- Aspect Ratio 2.2
- Video Resolution 2.7K
1080p HDR10 (HEVC Main 10) ← from the main movie page
Movie #2: A Fistful of Dollars
- Width 3840
- Height 1632
- Aspect Ratio 2.35
- Video Resolution 4K
Video 4K (HEVC Main 10) ← from the main movie page
I have a “Smart Collection” setup to hold all my 4K movies. The filter was initially set for “resolution is 4K”. I first noticed the discrepancy when these two did not show up in the collection. I modified the “Filters” to include “resolution is 2.7K” and now they do show up. This makes some sense because both are both very wide aspect and the height pixel count is below the standard 4K count, though both exceed the top of the 2K range.
But that’s not my issue, and I don’t want to start an argument about what constitutes 2K versus 4K. I’m fine accepting them tagged as either 2K or 4K… whatever Plex decides to do.
My concern is the inconsistency across Plex.
You can see the movie “65” shows 2.7K resolution under “info” but 1080p on the main page.
“A Fistful of Dollars” is a little better in some ways. It shows 4K in both “info” and on the main page for the movie, but does not get picked up by my “4K resolution” filter in the collection for some reason.
It seems like the “info”, the main movie page, and the “filters” are all doing things a little bit different from one-another.
These two closed posts seem to deal with similar issues.
