I noticed that after upgrading to the new iOS app, PGS subtitles no longer are working. Other types (ASS, SRT tested so far) work just fine, but PGS are showing in the middle of the screen and only showing partial subtitles (every other line, partial lines, etc). This is not the case with the web player–the subtitles work perfectly still. They were also working before upgrading to the new iOS app. I wanted to report this as a bug so it can hopefully be addressed in the future. Thanks!
Thank you for the reply! The issue isn’t with SRT subtitles. As I mentioned, those work completely fine when I tested on another video with the updated app. I also tested a different video file which utilizes ASS subtitles. These also displayed with no issues whatsoever from what I could tell. It only appears to be specific to PGS subtitles, which are embedded in the video I am watching. Subtitle burn is set to automatic in the app.
I am not using TestFlight, but I don’t think my iPad at home has been updated to the newest version yet so I can double check it later today. However, I am a little shy of 100 episodes into this show that I’ve been watching mostly via the iOS app (between my iPhone and iPad) and this is the first time I have seen this issue with the subtitles. I was also using the older version of the app just this morning without issue and upgraded before this subtitle issue started.
Just to add a little more context for what I am noticing…when they do appear whole, the timing is also off on them in the iOS app. It is ~3-4 seconds off from when it should be appearing. I thought this might be an issue with the specific episode, but when I watched the same file in the web player, the timing is spot on, leading me to believe it’s how the PGS subtitles are being interpreted. Other than that, I think the length of the line being displayed might be getting cut off due to the screen size maybe? I know other users have reported issues with aspect ratios/zoom, so just guessing there.
I have the same issue. If you set the subtitles to “Always Burn”, then the subtitles are in the correct position and timing is better. But this isn’t really a solution.
As I already stated, ASS subs work just fine. It’s only the PGS subs having an issue for me. I also confirmed that they are working on the previous build of the app from my iPad at home.
As spot1791 recommended, I just tried switching the subtitles from “Automatic” to “Always” for the Burn Subtitles option and they are correctly timed/showing again. So it’s some issue with the Automatic setting. I’ve always kept it on Automatic previously without a problem.
Thanks so much for saying so, glad I am not the only one. You’re absolutely right and switching it to Always makes them display correctly again, but we shouldn’t have to switch that on to make something that has always worked work again.
+1, also having the same issue.

And, like others, setting player to “always burn in” functions as a workaround, but of course causes transcoding as opposed to direct play on automatic.
