While I’m here, I’ll add a big +1 to the request for native subtitle support. Having my Plex server on a NAS with a crappy CPU makes direct play/stream absolutely critical. If I need to transcode a file for subs, it pretty much means I can’t play it at all.
I just wish Plex would ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY NOT SHOW SUBTITLES UNLESS I SPECIFICALLY TURN THEM ON. Just because I’m a completionist, I include subtitles when I put stuff on my server. But just because they are there on my server doesn’t mean I want Plex always showing them to me during playback. It’s really annoying when watching multiple TV show episodes back to back and every new episode that starts I have to pause, go to settings, turn off subtitles, resume watching.
You can disable auto subtitles in setting on your server. You might be able to do it directly from the app but it depends on the platform.
Harmony hub/keyboard support will be included in the next platform update. as far as soft subs I have a prototype running locally and basic tests look promising, however it hasn’t gone through long testing yet but it looks very promising.
Theme music for TV Shows isn’t available on the PS4 Plex client. It’s not necessarily a big issue but I’m wondering why its not included. It seems to work on my Xbox One so is there any reason why its not available on the PS4 app? Any knowledge if the team is working on this or a future possibility of including it?
Also some UI noise would be nice when navigating through / selecting shows and settings. The pure silence just seems weird.
@minymina this may sound weird or unbelievable, but playstation isn’t actually very good at playing sounds. it can certainly play them, but not at a latency that would make them acceptable for UI feedback sound.

Not even for background music like themes for shows? That’s really the main issue here that I’m missing.
As for UI sounds, this seems like a big issue for Sony. Other apps like the YouTube app seem to be able to play them. Can that not be reproduced with the Plex app? Even at a higher latency?
What about selecting subtitles BEFORE playing the movie. Even though I have English set as my language. It will still play embedded subtites automatically. I have to stop the movie and tell it no subtitles.
I tried setting up the server to play subtitles for foreign parts only but that never seems to work.
Is there possibly another update in the pipeline for the PS4 platform? I still suffer from constant crashes. I gave up reporting it because it happens so often. Random crashes for no reason, crashes when paused about 50% of the time, crashes when searching libraries, loads of lag when searching within a movie or show that is currently playing.(resulting in a lock up and then a crash)
I run my own unRAID server that is dedicated for PLEX and this happens on my home network. The server end is running perfectly and is updated to the current releases as they are issued. The PS4 though, never seems to get updated and the issues have gotten to where I am just really frustrated.

might be an ignorant question but what about H.265 support of 4K/UHD videos?
I know my 2 cents won’t matter but I believe that Plex wouldn’t be worrying about that for right now. From what I understand, the PS4 doesn’t support 4K/UHD video just yet. That’s why Sony/Playstation is in the works of making a “PS4.5” that supports 4K/UHD playback. Hopefully that gives you a better understanding.

I haven’t heard anything, yet. I’m sure that could change. Maybe it works out of the box! I mean it should.

What a ridiculous statement. The PS4 does indeed support 4k video playback. This is a console with enough processing power to provide 1080p real-time graphics. I think it can handle 4k.
There’s a difference between 4k gaming and 4k video. The PS$ does not provide 4k gaming, only PC can. 4k video is 100% possible given the hardware.

Maybe maybe not, but
Without hdmi 2.0 and hdcp 2.2 that’s pretty pointless for most apps
Sony only allows very limited codec support to apps like Plex’s, so I don’t think plex can do 4k on the base Ps4 at all. Platform is just too limiting.
One of the devs already mentioned the ps4 pro is going to come with slightly better support, higher bitrate and what not, but he wasnt even sure if they could use hevc on it.

That is correct. The platform is limited and Sony doesn’t make it easy on developers. With the PS4 Pro being released though, they will allow apps like Plex to have access to more codec support. The entire point of the pro is 4k video streaming. It does nothing at all when it comes to gaming. Pretty much the same console but with a slightly improved hardware setup.
Again, just to be clear, the PS4 Pro will not provide 4k real-time graphics. 4k gaming is not possible outside of PC. However, 4k video playback is 100% possible on a console the the PS4 and even the Xbox One.

The Original PS4 (2013) and the new PS4 Slim (2016) do not support 4K gaming (like you said) nor does it support 4K streaming (PS4 vs PS4 Slim vs PS4 PRO - Specs) Given the specs it forsure could but it doesn’t.

Yikes, hopefully Sony changes that and allows them more functionality. (I also wish Sony allowed backward compatibility with PS3 Games…But oh well…)> @minymina said:

The PS4 (2013) & PS4 Slim (2016) do not support 4K streaming (PS4 vs PS4 Slim vs PS4 PRO - Specs) but the PS4 PRO does.
The XBOX One does not support 4K (XBOX One vs XBOX One S - Specs) but the XBOX One S does.

This is a bit off, there’s already several games running at native 4K on the PS4 Pro, not counting the checkerboard upscaling the more demanding games require.
Granted, there’s a few games that run a bit slower on the Pro, but they’re running a bit slower while running at double the number of pixels and using a new upscaling technique compared to regular PS4s. Most games run faster and at higher resolutions.
Now the regular PS4 can handle 4K output, but without a hardware HEVC decoder it’s asking a lot of it to do 4K, and without HDMI 2.0 or HDCP 2.2 it’s limited to 30 fps and no DRM video. The Playmemories app will do it, but that’s about it (even the PS3 will output 4K). The Pro presumably has a hardware decoder for streaming apps like Amazon and Netflix, and I’d expect Plex to have access at some point.
The funny thing is the Playstation VR breakout box has an ARM with a hardware video decoder capable of 4K HEVC @ 60fps, but with the strict DRM requirements no Hollywood app could use it, with the HDMI chip it has it can’t output HDR, and the VR headset itself is just a 1080p panel anyway.

This is awesome news. I just bought a PS4 Pro with the intention of replacing my Roku with it and was really bummed when the Harmony remote wouldn’t work with it. Happy to see a solution is in the pipeline!

i get glitches while playing a high bitrate movie and turn on subtitles …! could you please improve the player state on the next sony’s update for the ps4 4.0 , so that it can get much high process from the ps4 's hardware?
That’s unfortunately out of our hand, If Sony improves the player or makes a better one available we will use it, but until they do we can only use the player they give us.
I know Sony’s pretty terrible, but is there a way we can just get the client to stop crashing while browsing? That’s all I really want from it, I’m running out of coder insults to put in the PS4 feedback form :^).
