Hi,
my setup is server running in docker (official Plex) on an Server with dual XEON CPUs. The Docker container does not run in network mode host and while all ports (according to Plex official) are exposed, only 32400 is published, which is all that’s needed in my setup.
For this reason, the container is on a Docker network (172.x.x.x) while the hardware server is on (192.x.x.x). Also all clients 8including the Nvidia Shield) are on 192.y.y.y or 192.z.z.z - meaning I have (for good reason) a routed multiple subnet and VLAN network. So Shield and server and Docker container are on different subnets connected by routers and/or Docker. Also, the Plex container is sitting behind a Traefik reverse proxy, as every other server service.
Still they are all connected by a gigabit infrastructure (L3 Switches or internally through Docker). This is running fine (except iOS Plex app, which will be another topic in another part of this forum). On the PMS I have setup 192.168.0.0/16,172.16.0.0/12 as LAN networks. This setup has been running fine for quite some time.
Now, I started a certain movie on the Nvidia Shield and after some seconds there was a message on the TV about some kind of streaming limitations and options to transcode - I really can’t exactly remember. After dismissing the message the server showed a transcoding session. Never had this before, because IMHO the Shield can DirectPlay almost anything. Sitting in front of the web UI into the server I canceled the playback as an admin.
Now I can start this very movie using the Plex web player on my computer, but trying to start it on the Shield again I get an error and the movie won’t start.

- How can I solve the playback error on the Shield?
- What are those [Req#140d/Transcode] in the log?
- Can I hw transcode on my server (messages: Codecs: hardware transcoding: opening hw device failed - probably not supported by this system, error: Generic error in an external library, Codecs: hardware transcoding: opening hw device failed - probably not supported by this system, error: Operation not permitted)?
- There seems to be a problem with Direct Play - can I solve it? (messages: MDE: MovieToBePlayed (2023): Direct Play is disabled and following)
- Why is there a message about bandwidth limit? I am on local LAN in my setup? (message: Streaming Resource: Required bandwidth unknown (media requires deep analysis) Changing decision parameters provided by client to fit bandwidth limit of 20000kbps)
