Playback error on every platform

Me too. Cannot browse DVR. Get “Something went wrong” error. Running Windows 11 server Version 1.41.8.9834.

@Jkwheeler1

You’re referencing DVR in Linux.

Would you please create a new thread appropriately tagged in server-windows ?

Thanks for the reply.
The network errors are irrelevant to the issue at hand.
They come from plex trying to sniff out neighbours on other network interfaces, which is forbidden by my firewall rules due to strict isolation.
They have been here for years and never caused any issue so far.
Also the playback issue disappears as soon as I restore my database from a couple of weeks ago, knowing that my network setup hasn’t changed for quite a while.

All the traffic for plex is allowed (and restricted to) subnets 192.168.12.0/24 and 192.168.16.0/24 with proper routing to and from the internet in both cases.
The fact that there are two valid local interfaces means I have to select “any” for preferred interface, which causes plex to try and talk to all interfaces that exist on the server, even to the ones it shouldn’t.

I know it’s a bit of a complex setup, but I swear it’s not the cause of the current issue. Anything else I can do to help troubleshoot this?

This has started plaguing my server for the last 2 days. Affecting every media and client.

W10 server running Version 4.147.1 currently. But have tried multiple downgrades to no avail.

Are there any updates from the devs on this issue. I seem to be having similar issues. Unable to play any media, movies, tv shows, music, photos. Running 1.41.9.9961 on Synology DSM 7.2.2

Anything I try to play, I get “An error occurred loading items to play.” In the logs all I see is “Got exception from request handler: std::exception” when this occurs.

Amazon Fire TV sticks are the only devices able to play, maybe something to do with direct play for them. However play history doesn’t work, and in the case you’re watching TV shows, the next episode never plays.

Attached limited logs from generating the errors via web player.

Read the content of the thread, dude.

Taking a step back and trying something different –

Has anyone attempted transcoding H.264 using the Forum Preview FFMPEG build with Plex/web on these boxes with these GPUs ?

Regarding the Generator errors I see in folks’ logs, Those are problems with the files (scanner) and what the database is expecting to find. Reanalyzing before testing the playback will give us accurate playback result there

I’m having the same issue. Browser and Plex player doesn’t work, but it works on my Nvidia shield and Pixel 8 phone.

My watch history has been broken for a few weeks, I need to manually update each episode as watched.

For the record, I am currently using 1.41.9.9961

Nvidia Shield is a Thick Player. It accepts a DirectPlay stream and does all the work. This is true of other devices like Amazon and some Phones.

I have asked for the new FFMPEG and Plex/web because:

  1. FFMPEG will be the new baseline very shortly.
    – It is based on PMS 1.41.8.
  2. Plex/web is the simplest player available. PMS & FFMPEG must do all the work. ANY errors are immediately visible. There is nothing else to complicate the diagnosis.

At the moment, in this thread, Watch History is not part of the discussion. Please hold that until the Playback issue is resolved.

I installed the FFmpeg preview and no change.

I tried running analyze on the specific file I wanted to play in browser first, still get thrown an error.

Nvidia shield playback seemed normal so far.

May I please see the DEBUG server logs ZIP which captures the playback using Plex/web as the player ?

Telling me the subjective results brings us no closer to identifying the problem.

Please IGNORE THE SHIELD.

I’ve attached logs of attempting to play a few items.

For future reference, which logs should we be gathering for this?
There is Plex Web > Debug
Manage > Troubleshooting > Download Logs
and Manage > Console [set to Debug]

@Lylesback2

Sorry, I cannot help with this. I will get someone who can.

You’ve presented Windows logs. I’m a Linux engineer and this is a Linux/NAS thread.

Playback and transcoding are entirely different on Windows.

Future reference: SERVER logs as requested (Settings - server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs) .. It gives you a ZIP file . These are the logs PMS generates and provide exactly what we need.

I have rolled back and installed the forum preview Version 1.41.8.9914.

  • Analysed all libraries.
  • Attempted to play some media via the web player with HEVC enabled.
  • Changed to HEVC to disabled and restarted Plex.
  • Attempted to play some more media.
  • Both times, same “An error occurred loading items to play.” prompt. Logs look different to before rolling back, I don’t see any clues.
  • Attached logs.

Thank you for any support.

@Matthew2051

Is this one of those Nvidia in a Syno with a riser card and 3rd party Nvidia drivers?
If so, which Nvidia drivers version and what does nvidia-smi report ?

Correct.

Up until recently I was running 535.154.05, cuda 12.2, but as I’ve been trying to get Plex working again, one of the steps I tried was updating to 550.163.01, cuda 12.4 (which didn’t make a difference).

Screenshot of nvidia-smi:

Screenshot of hardware for context:

Not sure if it helps, but this playback problem is everything in the web player. Photos, music, even trailers for movies and the like, things you wouldn’t expect transcoding to be required for (though that could be my lack of understanding).

Thanks again.

Apologies if my issue isn’t the same, but for the last 30 hours or so nothing will play on my server. There was a Plex docker update yesterday that seemed to fix the issue, but today nothing is playing again.

I’m having this same issue, it started yesterday when I was mid way through a watch together session. I’ve reinstalled Plex Server and the issue persists. Are there any instructions for rebuilding the DB and keeping all data?

As others have said, there’s no issue on Shield but other players don’t work, even Plexamp

Edit: Just to clarify, i’m running my Plex Server on Ubuntu server natively on an Intel N100 mini PC. Files are in network attached storage.

@ChuckPa Just an update to say I gave in and did a fresh install, having a working system cross-platform outweighed watch history, etc…

  • Complete removal of Plex, forum preview Version 1.41.8.9914
  • Rolled back GPU drivers (only updated for fault finding)
  • Fresh install of forum preview Version 1.41.8.9914
  • Configured everything as I like it, set transcoding to use HEVC
  • Tested a few videos.
  • All working as expected again.
  • Attached logs in case there is any useful info comparing before and after.

Thanks again for your support. Will keep an eye out for if the problem is identified / resolved in the future.

FWIW, (check your card)

My RTX2000 ada is up at 570.169 from the PPA.
