We still cannot play mkv files. media format is not supported.
Seems to work as I can play most of my files now.
Some files are playing but some are still not (and they played before all this). Like videos with pgs sub don’t play, it just get the error “multimedia file format not supported”.
Videos with more than 30 subtitles transcode.
I installed version 5.25.3 on two different Samsung TVs and the problem persists.
Please heeeeeelp
My Samsung (2018) has 5.25.3 client and no files seems to work when I transcode, although direct play seems to work for some formats (the ones failing may be the ones the TV doesnt support itself.
Makes no difference if I set it to secure or insecure.
Still having issues with certain files not playing.
Could you provide logs following the steps I’ve posted above?
My friend had the same issue too. He got his 2019 Samsung 55 q60r after I got my TV.
I have two Samsung tvs too a 2018 55" q60 and a 2018 65" q70r too. However, they weren’t affected.
What I tried was:
- Under the network tab I set Secured connections: disabled
- had my friend try to start up plex on his tv. (no connection to my plex. Normal.q)
- I set the secured connections back to preferred
- had my friend try again. Problem fixed for him.
Hope this helps.
The new version did the trick on my Tizen TV’s
The latest update broke Plex on my Tizen 2.4 2016 TV.
I was running a custom cert to make up for the LE expiry issue and that had the app working. Now it appears the app is ignoring that the cert is broken and I can see my content but get a playback error.
For testing I removed the custom cert and restarted the Plex server. After doing that I could still browse on my TV (which wasn’t possible before after the DST root expired) and still got playback errors.
The only fix that worked was blocking plex.direct DNS at my router which forced use of my custom cert (when its enabled in settings).
The custom cert I am using is from ZeroSSL using acme.sh to manage it. What might be possible for Plex to do is to either switch from LE to ZeroSSL as that seems to be supported on more devices due to its root CA for all users or perhaps to give an option in settings that lets an end user change (this would enable a slower rollout for testing).
Disabling secure connections is not an acceptable solution as I run my server with remote access enabled and do not want my ISP or anyone else seeing what runs over the connection.
EDIT:
Looking at logs confirmed it was trying to use the plex.direct domain before I blocked it as I can see the following in the logs when my TV was logging to server:
[AVPlay (NONE)] open ("https://s172-30-1-1.removed.plex.direct:32400/...
[AVPlay (IDLE)] setListener ({})
[AVPlay (IDLE)] setDisplayRect (0, 0, 1920, 1080)
[AVPlay (IDLE)] setDisplayMethod ("PLAYER_DISPLAY_MODE_FULL_SCREEN")
[AVPlay (IDLE)] setTimeoutForBuffering (120)
[AVPlay (IDLE)] prepareAsync (, )
[AVPlay (IDLE)] onAVPlayError: PLAYER_ERROR_CONNECTION_FAILED
[PlaybackSessionController] playback state changed to: stopped
Playback error occurred. Reason: BufferingTimeout, Player took too long buffering, stopping playback
[PlaybackSessionController] could not retry, reporting error
Opening modal: ActionsModal
how do we do that?
With the fix, you gotta completely exit the app on the TV and try again. Not just shutting down the TV. It worked for a lot of people who are using plex on my server. Also i switched back to Required security connection.
I’d like to clarify my commentary better. @sLumpy for what I noticed here I can’t play hevc/x265 files that need to transcode. Like the exemple with pgs subs, if the file is in x264 the transcode happens normally, but if the file is x265 it get the error “multimedia file format not supported”.
Again, before all this I was able to play this transcode files.
The latest version is just completely broken on my Samsung TV.
Will play nothing. Doesn’t matter what settings you have.
Resetting, Reinstalling, nothing works.
Doesn’t like mkv files
No files work

The problem persists and PLEX doesn’t comment on it. It doesn’t matter what version yo have installed on the TV or what settings you set, unsecured connections, video in original quality, etc.
On Hetzner german data center, its criminal offense to allow unsecured plex. I’ve got letter from department of justice from Germany court which stated that opening Plex unsecured ports will allow security holes and they blocked my server, till I secured back the Plex.
In the letter they stated that Plex platform is one of most unsecured platforms with security holes and they advice that I don’t use PLEX.
Exactly the same with me. I have a Samsung model UA55KU7000WXXY and I have had no problems playing video files that HAVE played perfectly before. Now, I can’t play anything in the library.
I shut the TV down, unplugged it, tried again and the same issue.
I uninstalled Plex and reinstalled it and the same issue.
The same files play perfectly on my Win 10 PC and even my iPad using Plex.
Go Figure! It surely must be the Plex app on the TV?
I give up!
My Samsung TV users are all calling me to say that the Plex app won’t play any episodes from my server all of a sudden. Even episodes they were able to watch a week ago do not play now. 90% of my videos are in x265 format, in mkv container. And there doesn’t seem to be a way for them to roll back the app version to one that was stable. Plex staff please do something!
