In the last few months I’ve noticed that Plex no longer works properly on my Samsung TV. I’ve been a Plex user for years so I was shocked to see that every single thing I attempted to load would hang for a while before showing a “multimedia file format not suppported” playback error. Everything I’ve tested had played successfully in the past. Something is clearly wrong.
Have you tried uninstalling the app and set up fresh? I’ve got the latest version installed and have seen no difference with playback
I know this is an obnoxious reply, but Plex on our Tizen TV is the most reliable player in our home. I’d investigate the server side.
The only option is to delete which I assume uninstalls. After that I reinstalled with no luck.
It doesn’t look like it’s the server. Plex works fine on my phone and bedroom TV.
I read that something happened in the last few months with certificate signing that meant a handful of TVs were affected. There were some instructions to follow that should have fixed the issue but they didn’t. Hoping Plex staff will see this and know what to do.
Yeah I gave up on this issue and am advising all of my users on a Samsung TV to go buy another client device since they are all completely dead in the water - different model Samsung TVs, all receiving the multimedia error.
This is a disaster.
Such a shame. Plex runs superbly on my tv apart from the issue that makes it unusable lol. I tried changing the permissions with no luck.
If there is an issue with certificate signing what are your settings on the server side with regard to network settings? Are secure connections set to compulsory?
Is there a way perhaps to roll back to an old working version?
Allow insecure connections set to always. Prior to that it was set to on the same network as server which didn’t work either
I have the exact same problem…is there a solution?
EDIT - fixed
Following a suggestion on another thread, fix required disabling secure connections on PMS (server) and the Samsung Plex Client. So:
- Plex Media Server → Settings → Network → Secure Connections: Disabled
- Samsung Plex Client → Settings → Advanced → Allow Insecure Connections: Always
Previous problem
I have the same problem. I hadn’t used plex for the last week, turned on the TV and now get huge lag starting a video and then spinner, then Playback Error
.
Samsung Plex client version: 5.28.2
Samsung Tizen version: 1300
Samsung Model: UN40MU6300
I followed your advice and I’ve basically bricked the Plex client. I changed the secure connection option in the client with no improvement. I then logged in through the browser to change the secure connections option there and now I can’t even access my library using the client. What’s worse is that I can’t login on my tv, which means I can’t change the setting back on the web server to fix it.
Doesn’t look like it if you look at linuxdave’s comment
Was there ever any improvement?
I was able to change the setting using the client on my computer but either way that solution doesn’t work for me. Not sure how you got so lucky
All of my users reported their Samsung clients are working again after reinstalling/updating their Plex client App. I’m running the latest version of server on Ubuntu.
Thanks for getting back to me. When you say users, who are you referring to? Are you involved with Plex or is it something else?
That sounds promising, I must be the only one who still can’t connect. The client app is up to date, but I could still delete and reinstall just in case. Do you know what secure network settings your users have?
I specifically get this error only if secure connections is enabled required at the server (not Preferred), and only when playing DTS or TrueHD codecs.
If I disable secure connections and allow insecure connections, it then transcodes the DTS and TrueHD codecs for my Samsung TV again.
I report this issue on this thread at well: Plex on Samsung and LG Smart TV become slow and lagging interface - #20 by MarPlex
And tagged @sLumpy which seems to be a Plex Employee aware of these issues with Samsung and LG TVs
