Playback error on samsung tv

Yep I’m in the same boat, I have the latest version and still seeing loads of issues.

I can confirm that my issue, playback error upon attempting to transcode, is not fixed with 5.27.2, platform version 4. I see “Device is Tizen (TV 2018)” in the logs. Happy to capture more verbose logs if it will help.

So I can speak for others experiences, but I’m finding that the issue for me seems to lie with the subtitles. I’ve tried streaming the files that weren’t working with subtitles turned off and it streamed fine. It seems like something is happening with particular subtitle files and the Samsung TV, at least in what I’ve discovered in my setup thus far. Where I can, I’ve converted the subtitles to SRT format and those then seem to stream fine. I don’t know if this is truly the cause, just an observation I’ve run into in my own troubleshooting. It’s still a weird issue to run into as all of these played fine before without any tinkering anyway, so something has definitely seemed to change in the Samsung firmware in regards to some of the formatting.

I’m now curious if anyone else have played with subtitles to see if that may be an actual triggering point

That’s actually an older version. You will find the latest version that has updated is 5.27.3 platform version 5 and that has the playback issues.

Hi, the problem you describe was with TXT and SRT ANSI . The correct subtitle format that works for me is SRT UTF-8. But that’s not a problem. The current problem is that video playback using transcoding does not work on Samsung TVs.
Example:
The same movie, the same Samsung TV and fast internet connection - the server does not start transcoding, playback is direct - the movie works
Same movie, same Samsung TV and slow internet connection - server starts transcoding - movie does not work and “media file format unsupported” message is displayed.
It helps to disable both on the server and in the application on the TV “secure connection”, but then other devices have a problem with the connection :frowning:
This is my situation.

Important to check if your client sees your server as “nearby” or “remote” though. If it says “remote” then the “allow insecure connections on same network” will be ignored. “Media Server Status” will tell you in the client. I just migrated mine to a new server and only now do I have this issue, because previously I had my old server viewed as Nearby by my Samsung client, but my new server isn’t yet.

Have there been any changes since then? I have the same error… Do you have a solution? Thank you!

Direct playback works for me, but remote throws an error message. It does not work.

Please help! Is there a solution to this problem??

Yes, I now have 5.27.3 platform 3 ( for my 2017 TV) and local playback works flawlessly (again). No issues whatsoever with local direct play with and without subs. I’m unable to test remote play or transcoding :man_shrugging:

I have 5.28.2 installed and I still don’t think the issues are resolved

Thanks

5.28.2 as well. Same issue playing some content from a Samsung smart TV. Roku works fine.

I’m logging to my server (in another state) and will DM it next week when I’m home.

Side note, Samsung lost a large TV sale today because of this problem. Do they care? Nah probably not. But I do.

Just to share my experiences. I had some issues with my remote Plex server over the summer, and finally got around to fixing them. I was astonished when my Samsung TV wasn’t working when I went to reconnect, because my phone, PC, Amazon Fire TV, tablet, PS5, etc. all work fine.

TV: Samsung UE75TU7100KXXU
Firmware: 2101.2
Plex client version: 5.28.2
Plex server version: 1.24.5.5173

I’ve been through all the troubleshooting (insecure connections, language to English, DirectPlay, etc.). I did find a way to fix the problem, which was to set my Video → Remote Quality → Original in the app on the TV.

This isn’t ideal, because it is a bandwidth hog, but it seems if any transcode is required, the Samsung App just doesn’t start playback.

A real fix for this would be great, but this workaround may fix it for some people who are struggling.

EDIT - fixed

Following a suggestion above, fix required disabling secure connections on PMS (server) and the Samsung Plex Client. So:

  1. Plex Media Server → Settings → Network → Secure Connections: Disabled
  2. Samsung Plex Client → Settings → Advanced → Allow Insecure Connections: Always

Previous Problem

I have the same problem. I hadn’t used plex for the last week, turned on the TV and now get huge lag starting a video and then spinner, then Playback Error.

Samsung Plex client version: 5.28.2
Samsung Tizen version: 1300
Samsung Model: UN40MU6300
PMS version (Linux): 1.24.5.5173

Modifying Direct/Remote Play has no effect on the above problem. Plex works on all other clients (Web, MacOS Plex, Android Plex)

Interesting, that didn’t do it for me alone. I also had to change the video streaming to “Original”. I suspect the problem is anything that has to transcode.

Do you know if your content is transcoding?

@sLumpy Here are some logs of playback errors.

Here are some of the related warnings / error I found about theses playback.

I’m having a different playback problem than this.
On TV shows and recordings encoded with Stereo AAC_LATM on my 2021 Samsung QN94a play with no volume though they are fine on other PLEX clients.
I posted about it here: https://forums.plex.tv/t/no-audio-on-recordings-with-aac-latm-on-samsung-qn94a/762886/3
I have had it work sporadically on some recordings but then the next day with a recording from the same channel and source it will be broken again.

Anyone else experienced this issue?
I’ve tried setting insecure connections, direct play and stream on and off (fails to play at all with either of those off) and updated the TV firmware to the latest.
Any help greatly appreciated as I am at a total loss now.

Well, I’ve read and re-read, and tried, and modified, and deleted, and uninstalled, and reinstalled, and stopped, and started, and powered off, and powered on, and danced on one leg, and crossed my eyes, and not one thing has changed “Playback Error Multimedia File Format Not Supported” on EVERY SINGLE FILE I HAVE: TV, Video, Audio.

Samsung TV Model: UN65MU6290
TV Software Level: T-KTMAKUC-1300.3
Plex for Samsung: Version 5.29.1
Platform Version: 3
Plex Server Version: 1.25.2.5319-c43dc0277

I promise that I had not changed anything or any setting when I went from “all is fine” to “nothing works.” By the way, EVERY file works great from a Windows Browser, AT&T DirectStream Settop Box, and iPhone.

Again, I have made every setting change called out in this and other forums, but not one has changed the failing outcome.

I apologize for starting a new post, but I can’t seem to figure out why things have appeared to have gone quiet without any real words from Plex Support on if this is a known issue and if it is being worked.
Thanks tons…

Server Version#: 1.24.3.5033
Player Version#: 5.29.1

If i update past server version 1.24.3 the Samsung Tizen player no longer works. I just get:
“Playback error: An unexpected playback problem occurred” on everything. I’ve tried some of what others have suggested to disable “Allow Direct Play/Stream”, but this made no difference.

I’ve tried updating to the latest release multiple times and have to keep rolling back to get it working on my Samsung TV again… my latest attempt was to update to 1.25.2.5319 but still no luck.

If others are having this issue, then this post may help them roll back to a confirmed working server version for Samsung Tizen TV’s.
