Have you been able to solve the problem?
I got the same issue. Tried some stuff but there are still movies that can’t be played due to unsupported file format while they did work in the past.
I don’t think Samsung are going to fix this issue and so my ‘Smart’ Tv has become just another dumb TV. I purchased a FireStick from Amazon to get around this problem as Samsung refuse to take ownership of their own certificate issue. Really poor support from them and so I won’t purchase a Samsung product again.
I had this issue too - fixed it by setting both insecure connection options to always, and changing playback quality to original.
I’ve done this fix as recommended multiple places on Forums, but it does not change anything for me: I still receive the same File Format Issue.
I am not sure how your question refers to my purchase of a firestick? Did you reply to the wrong message perhaps?
Since yesterday the problem has also occurred on my tv UE43AU9070 but only for 4K files despite being connected locally to the server.
Plex app and PMS updated to the latest version.
Problem that has been going on for months now, absurd!
I have the same problem with two different Samsung TVs (Q8FN and Q9FN). Both work while transcoding locally, both work with remote and local direct stream, but both fail with remote transcoding. Client version 5.29.1.
I use my tv samsung with plex last week on wednesday. I have arrived yesterday and it is not working the remote streaming on my samsung tizen tv. On plex app everthing ok.
@DanBrad1 - I have rolled back to 1.24.3.5033 and I toggled “Allow Direct Play/Stream” but I still can’t get it to work. Same “Playback Error Multimedia File Format Not Supported” error. Not even old Movies and TV Shows will play. I guess no surprise, but my Music collection of MP3’s plays just fine…
Does anyone have any thoughts short of using a FireStick or Roku Stick?
Do you have any updates regarding this situation? I keep having my users complain to me that they cannot play most of my library due to the Samsung app playback error.
Hi Guys,
Do you have any updates on this subject?
Thanks
It seems like there are 2 different places that you can allow unsecure connections in the TV app and one of them won’t fix the problem. A friend of mine had this issue and they were able to get it working by updating the setting in both places.
-
The most obvious place is the Settings option at the bottom of the navigation list on the left. My friend found that updating just here didn’t fix it.

If you click on your profile icon at the top of the navigation list on the left, you get some more options and there is a Settings option here too. Update to allow unsecure settings here too and hopefully you’ll be back in business.
Thank you. Your suggestion worked for me
The problems seems to affect samsung tvs and are related to the DTS codec used within those movies that cannot be played anymore. For example, if you will try to play those movies and you will turn off the subtitle you will notice that the movie its played well, but you don’t have sound from time to time or not at all.
Conclusions:
Samsung TV doesn’t support DTS because they have to pay dts lincense and they don want to do that anymore since 2019 (or kind of…) and it looks like other tv vendors follow this behavior.
Plex released and update yesterday (1.25.5.5492) in an attempt to fix this issue, but I think this will not be possible at least for samsung tvs…
In my opinion this will not be fixed by Plex team and we have to live with that. But we will see.
Ah, playback errors are back
Everything was working just fine with the previous versions and default settings. Please fix this once and for all ![]()
Now:
Samsung 2017 with Plex client 5.31.2 platform 3
PMS 1.25.5.5492
I’m getting a lot of playback errors on my new Samsung TV. And it’s only on random movies, like some play and some don’t.
Could you try rolling back PMS to version 1.24.x and see if that resolves the issue? We’re trying to track down if these playback issues are related to another issue.
Good news @sLumpy playback works again (need to do more tests) with:
PMS 1.25.6.5577
Samsung 2017 with Plex client 5.32.1 platform 3
Many thanks.
FLAC files won’t play on the Samsung QE55Q80 series. Only with disable Direct Play the music is playing but with transcoding to AAC.
This has been going on for a long time now. Will there be an update for this soon?
