Playback Error "Please Check That the File Exists and the Necessary Drive is Mounted"

Server Version#: 1.18.7.2457
Player Version#: Multiple

I have been using PLEX for around two years with little to no issue before this, a few months ago I migrated my server install from my desktop PC to a dedicated workstation machine I built.

Before moving everything I had no backup drives and I’m aware this is a risky practice, so after I moved everything over I went ahead and created a drive pool with some built in redundancy in case of failures. I moved all of my media onto the pool and started using plex as usual.

Here is where the issues began:
When copying any new media to the drive any user attempting to access the media will get the error (Playback Error “Please Check That the File Exists and the Necessary Drive is Mounted”). So I checked the pool, and it’s healthy, with no issues transferring files to/from the pool. Changed permissions on the drive to the administrator user, no change, any time the drive is written to the error appears for ANY file for ALL connected users.
Could only clear after a system restart. After restart everything will work fine for a day or two so long as the drive is not accessed directly (copying new media to drive).
Signs point to the drive pool, so I remove 1 drive from the pool, transfer a copy of all media to the drive and test again. But alas, same result. I tried scanning the server logs but I’ll be honest and say I’m not sure what I’m looking at here.

I also attempted a bundle clean and library optimization, no fixes yet.
Let me know if you want any logs I will provide them after turning off verbose.

Verified file paths for files are correct. Without changing file paths restarting system will correct issue temporarily.

In Plex… open the video’s pre-play screen and click on `… > Get Info.
Does the path showing for the item match the path on your file system. Also… is the media hosted on an internal drive or on an external USB / NAS?

Okay,
I tried it, copied and pasted about 5 different movie/tv show paths direct from the server into the file explorer bar, launched the appropriate movie/episode every time.

The drive is internal. The previous pool was comprised of the internal drives but was also hosted as a network share so I could direct download files from my desktop PC, though that is no longer the case.

When the error occurs the next time… go to Settings > Server > Troubleshooting and click Download Logs and post the resulting Zip file. Please include a short note what video failed playing (makes finding the related log entries easier).

Okay, I can probably make it fail sometime soon so I should be able to get back to it in less than 24 hours. Thanks for the quick replies

Okay here’s what I’ve got. The last file I attempted to access was 6 Underground (movie) but I should note that when this occurs it happens to ALL of the server files. It is not file specific.Plex Media Server Logs_2020-03-15_06-23-48.zip (4.0 MB)

hmm… there’s not super much to see.
the logs state Plex is trying and failing to open the following files (error message: “no such file or directory”):

F:\TV Shows\The Legend of Korra (2012) Season 3 S03 + Extras (1080p BluRay x265 HEVC 10bit AAC 5.1 RCVR) REPACK\The Legend of Korra (2012) - S03E08 - The Terror Within (1080p BluRay x265 RCVR).mkv
G:\Movies\6.Underground.2019.1080p.NF.WEBRip.1600MB.DD5.1.x264-GalaxyRG[TGx]\6.Underground.2019.1080p.NF.WEBRip.1600MB.DD5.1.x264-GalaxyRG.mkv

Can you confirm the files exist in that exact directory?

PS: on a total different matter… I’m surprised that file naming for Korra ever worked for you. That’s pretty much as far away from Plex’ naming conventions as it could get.

The actual directory for both files is supposed to be E:/ not F:/ or G:/ its odd that it shows up that way still. Because the plex GUI tells me its mapped to E:/…
What can I do?

And yeah, I have filebot I haven’t made it through my whole library yet haha

is it possible that during certain conditions Plex is reverting to my old drive paths from before the server migration? And then the restart is overriding with the new paths?
If this is the case how could I fix it?

sounds unlikely.
it’s more likely those items didn’t get fixed during your migration in the first place.
you might want to do a Plex Dance for them…

I think its probably best at this point if I do a fresh install and just re-import the files from the pool

I am also getting this error:

Playback Error

Please check that the file exists and the necessary drive is mounted.

for all of my video files. It started a month or maybe a few ago and I haven’t had time to look into it very much. It started after I uploaded about 10 new video files.
