Playback issues with Opus downloads on iOS (10)

Hello,

since I couldn’t find a bug tracker, I would like to submit my questions to the forum:

I’ve been using the Plexamp music player for a few weeks now and I love it. Especially the support of my aging iPhone 5c with iOS 10 is great, so I can continue to use it as an iPod. Due to the low amount of free space (16 GB version) I wanted to try some Opus downloads (as I didn’t want to give away storage for my FLACs with at least CD quality).

Unfortunately, poor playback quality occurs with these Opus downloads, what sounds to me like slight stuttering with short jumps. Oddly, this effect only occurs with transcoded downloads and not when streaming with on-the-fly transcoding or during FLAC playback. Does anyone know what triggers this behavior? I have tried setting the Opus bitrate from 128 kbit/s to a different (higher or lower) value, but the problem seems to occur independently. I don’t have another (newer) iPhone to try, but my Android smartphones play Opus downloads flawlessly.

[Offtopic] Other suggestions for improving Plexamp:

  • On my Windows PC, blank lines in synced lyrics are not displayed correctly. I use them to structure the lyrics. Although they are displayed and are clickable too, they have a very low height, which makes them hard to see. I suspect this has something to do with the font, as this problem only occurs within the desktop app on my Windows and Ubuntu PCs, and not on Android/iOS. With the provided synchronized lyrics (from LyricFind), this error miraculously does not occur.
  • Will there be a future implementation of the Windows Media Control overlay, which shows up when volume changes?

As I doubt that server logfiles are helpful in dealing with client problems, I have refrained from creating any, but could do so if needed. I’m just a little concerned about privacy when it comes to logs.

I am running the latest version of Plexamp (3.4.4) and PMS (1.22.1.4228) on a Synology DS218+.

Hmm, that doesn’t make a ton of sense. Do you hear the same things if you play a transcoded Opus twice in a row? (that would be cached, similar to downloads).

Noted!

If you mean integration with Windows Media then perhaps yes, we’ve tried in the past and it was tricky.

Thank you for your reply!

I have tried it with a clean sample file and the same error seems to occur. I recorded it through the line-in port on my PC and it looks like the second playback attempt was quieter with short peaks in loudness:

Warning: the recording may be a bit loud.
