Playback keeps stopping every few minutes

I am using:

Server Version 1.41.6.9685
iOS App 2025.15.0
M4 iPad Pro

Sometimes it stops and starts again, sometimes goes to the “just played” screen. Original or choosing a streaming quality doesn’t matter. I realize this sounds a bit like my network can’t keep up, but it does this on downloaded content too.

It kept happening when I was away and not connected to the server as well, in case it was somehow preferring the streamed version over the downloaded even though I started it from the downloaded section.

Playback from an Apple TV is fine, so the issue is definitely with the iOS app.

The iPad gets hot as well just to add to the trainwreckedness.

I have the same problem and it’s been reported multiple times, I hope Plex takes action quickly. They flipped the ■■■■-switch from the “Downloads”-feature to the, rather more essential, “Playback”- feature with this iOS/iPadOS release.

This still happens in 2025.17

Here are some logs.

Works in the web app

I had this issue too, and I think I have an intuition about what is causing it.

When playing downloaded media, the issue does happen if the device has an active internet connection, but does not happen in airplane mode. so, my intuition is that the player tries to “sync” itself to the “last played” playback position it receives from the server, but the server isn’t updating the playback position properly, and therefore gets “stuck” at an earlier point in the playback process (or jumps to the end if your % watched is close enough to the end where it would mark the media as “played”). This doesn’t happen in airplane mode because the server cannot be queried for playback status.

If I’m right, I don’t think there’s anything you can do here - looks like a(nother) iOS app bug we’d need to wait for the Plex team to resolve.

Glad I’m not the only one experiencing this. The iOS app forced update is just horrible. Unusable. My suggestion would be to downgrade it to the latest stable release. I’d suggest testing the version before release. Also the layout is just horrible, it now takes 3-4 steps to get to where I want, when it even works, rather than 1-2.

Whomever thought this was an improvement (and the person who approved it) should really be fired.

It is insane that this passed QA. Going via the Web interface works as does the AppleTV App, so it is clearly down to the iOS App. How do you break streaming local content on iOS, this is not some exotic combo.

The iOS App has a lot fewer settings for Quality of a file.

The Web app has Convert Automatically, the most useful one. Seems it is the adaptive one and it shows current Mbps as the file plays. Show All opens a huge range of options, Max, High and Medium for 1080 down to 160

The same file on iOS App, the only options are Original, 320p and 240p

This is in 2025.18.0

I’m getting an issue for downloaded and files streamed from the server: every 10m or so, the episode / movie just starts back at the beginning.

I was looking up this issue today and I found this thread when someone referenced an iOS issue, but it’s also an Android issue.

I will be playing a downloaded video, and in airplane mode it works ok, but as soon as I turn off airplane mode and the cellular connects (or if the inflight wifi connects) it will restart the playback from the beginning.

Today I was driving through an area with spotty cell phone service and was trying to listen to the audio of some cartoons I know by heart, and I had to stop cause every time the cell would connect for a second, it would restart playback, and I can’t pick up my phone and play with the controls while driving.

I really hope we get an option like “Ignore internet connectivity when playing from downloads”
