Playback of mp4 video transcoding / not supported

Server Version#: 1.18.4.2171
Player Version#: 2.012

When I try to stream an mp4 video from my Plex server using the Plex app on my Samsung tv with playback set to auto it transcodes it causing it to buffer intermittently.

If I set it to direct play before starting the movie I get an error message saying the format isn’t supported

Now the wierd thing is that if I let the movie run for 2-3 minutes, stop it, change the playback from auto to direct play and resume the movie it works fine, no buffering and shows as direct play in the status rather than transcoding

Just to update that I’ve found what was causing the playback wierdness.

I put v2.013 on a usb stick and that ran fine, so thinking it was an issue with 2.012 I uninstalled it and tried, in vain, to install 2.013 via USB … couldn’t get it to go so I re-installed the plex app from the samsung store page and it played an mp4 video fine using direct play.

I went through and setup my preferences in the app on the tv and it started with the “not supported” message and transcoding.

It turns out that it’s due to me having plex play a trailer before the movie so I can use the preroll feature, if I turn the trailers off it fixes the playback problem.

All of my preroll files are mkv format files so I’m guessing it’s something to do with the format of the streamed trailer and switching over to playing mp4 files?

Is this a bug in the samsung tv app or the server side?
The Samsung tv I have is a UE48HU7500 which I guess won’t be getting much support now as it’s a few years old so I’m hoping it’s something that can be sorted in the server software
