Players missing from players list

I have recently installed Plex but most of the devices are missing from my players list. Searching for new players doesn’t find them. How do I add a new player so I can fling the currently playing track to an android app or a web app? Thanks

From which Plex client do you want to fling media to which plex client?

Do you have a Plex server in the same local network as your clients? Some clients cannot be flung to. Some clients can only be flung to if there is a Plex server in the same local network “relaying” the commands.

Do you use Chrome as the “flinging” client? https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/227803/plex-players-button-no-longer-functioning-properly

I want to fling media from both an iPad and an android tablet to Windows plex web app running on firefox. That is because the music server is a windows machine connected to mixers and the main pre-amp. I could change the browser to chrome if it makes a difference.

The plex server is on the same network.

I have tried flinging from the windows web app on the plex server and the android tablet. Neither can “see” other windows web app as a player.

The Web app has just recently learned to receive commands. It might be that the version you are using hasn’t learned this yet.
Are you using the local or the hosted web app? https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200288666-Opening-Plex-Web-App
The hosted app is newer and might work a bit better in this regard.

I’d say if you want it exclusively for music, a better way is to use a ‘Chromecast Audio’

It seems that, accidentally, I was using the web app although it doesn’t look like the one in the link you put up (there is no orange launch button). Today, the web app has appeared as a player when it wasn’t there yesterday and there seemed to be nothing I could do to get it to appear! I can also fling the music to it. I have no idea what happened here having wasted hours yesterday trying to make it work.

I am not using Plex exclusively for music although I will look at Chromecast for the music element.

Thanks for your help.

Now today, the web app has disappeared off the players list again. Any ideas what is going on with this? It seems to be uncontrollable as to when and where you are able to fling media.

Do you have several network adapters in your server machine? (e.g. Wired and Wireless?)
If so, do you frequently switch between them?

If you have only one network adapter, is your server connected per wire to the network?

I’d advise you to make the following adjustment on all Windows machines used for Plex, no matter if they’re used as server or client:

If the above doesn’t bring any improvement, I’d try setting up OpenPHT on your Windows machine. Cast to this instead.

Thanks for the suggestions. There is only one network adapter on the server machine and on the music machine. Both are wired.

I also thought both were already set to not turn off the device but I checked. The one on the music machine was already correctly set, the one on the Plex server was not. It wouldn’t surprise me if Windows 10 changed it back by itself, it keeps doing that to most settings! I’ll see if that makes any difference.

I’ll also look at OpenPHT.

Thanks

Since recent updates some of the apps seem to have improved on this subject and some have got worse.

The recent update to the web app appears to have fixed the problem with the web app player missing when you access it from the android app but not when you access it from another web app or the Windows 10 app.

In fact the Windows 10 app has got worse. It used to find the web app on the players list about 50% of the time if you waited 30mins to an hour. Now it does not find it at all.

It also seems to be completely random whether the new web app finds the web app on another computer. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t.

Has anyone else managed to find a resolution to this problem?

Unfortunately I was too quick mentioning that things have improved!

The android app has now lost all players except for the Roku and the web app only shows the android player and the Roku. All instances of the web app (on every different device and with every different browser) have disappeared.

I am still struggling to make this work.

I have moved the Windows 10 laptop to be the music player running the Win10 Plex app. This is a test to see if I should invest in Win 10 machine to play the music so that it will appear to Plex as a player. However, other plex apps cannot see the laptop as a player. The laptop can see my Win10 tablet as a player but the Win 10 tablet cannot see the laptop as a player. The Plex server also cannot see the laptop as player but the laptop is connected to it via the Win 10 Plex app.

All ideas on how to get this work would be appreciated.

a browser restart brings up but just fr half hour.?
