I have folders that I use as playlists. I am constantly adding music to these folders. I have songs named starting by track number, 01 Artist name - song name. I also have the track number tagged properly. In Plex music if I go in to one of these folders and press play on one of the songs Plex will not play the folder in order. It plays the song I selected to play then plays everything by the same artist inside that folder instead of going in the order of the folder. When I am viewing the songs in the folder by folder view they are in the correct order though. Has anyone found a way to do this with Plex? I know I can create a playlist but as I am always adding new songs in to these folders I have to update the playlist every time. It is annoying and seems like a basic feature. I have to use a subsonic media server for my music because it can do this. I would love to be able to use Plex for all my media.
When I play music in folder view, Plex plays the tracks in the order they appear, so I’m not sure why that isn’t happening for you.
As for playlists, you could create a smart playlist, and the playlist will be updated automatically when Plex sees new tracks in the folder.
Do you remember changing any settings to get it to do this? I am going to check in to the smart playlist, thanks for that info, I didn’t know those existed.
Here are a couple screenshots as well. The first is the songs in the correct order of the folder view. The second is the play queue after I click the play button next to the top song.
Taking a second look, I realized what I tried before wasn’t exactly the same thing you described. So I found a different folder that better reflected yours, and I see the same behavior you are - it plays all tracks by one Album Artist, then goes back and plays the next Album Artist, etc.
So I’m seeing the same thing you are, and I don’t know if there’s a way to change it, other than to edit the tags in the files in this folder and make the Album Artist the same for all (or maybe remove the Album Artist tag for all) and see what happens.
I also don’t see a way to use Custom Filters to specify everything from a folder, so the Smart Playlist idea may have been bogus advice as well.
That’s what I’m finding too. If I play a full album from one artist it will play in order. I appreciate the help though. Trying to see if I can set a record label tag and make a smart playlist off that maybe. I still don’t think I should have to go through all that trouble to play a folder in order though.
Moving to Feature Requests. I have looked at other forum posts and this seems to be an issue for a while now. I am a Lifetime Plex Pass user, a comment from a Plex Team Member would be appreciated.
I am also having the issue with playing music from the folder view.
It seemed counter intuitive that I don’t have a play all or shuffle all type selection when in folder view.
I like having shows playing all day while I work, I don’t like to pick each file to play. Would be nice to select a folder and say play random, boom!
